Car refund/repair

Hi All need some advice here I bought a 2nd hand car 6 weeks ago from a dealer and took out a 12m mapfre warranty with same. I did the usual checks etc when I bought it and test drove it and it seemed fine. Since then it's power has deteriorated a lot and I got it looked at at a local garage- when he investigated it looks like a big job and he says the engine could be in trouble. He didn't have time to fully investigate and advised me to return to garage. I spoke to them and they said they would only cover up to mapfre price. I feel I should have some recompense as the car was clearly not of merchantable quality when sold. Am I entitled to a refund/repair or would I need to go legal on these guys to achieve same?

Hi- the mapfre warranty I have is the freeway €1250 + vat. They haven't agreed to cover anything yet as the exact fault hasn't been diagnosed.

The warranty should be in additions your statutory rights and not instead-of.

    That's an expensive warranty!

Did you get the car inspected by a mechanic at the time of purchase? Did the dealer give you a warranty? did they sell you the Mapfre warranty or did you buy it on your own?

First thing to do is get the problem properly diagnosed so you know what needs fixing and how much it will cost. Then look at taking the dealer to the small claims court as it would seem you are protected here by the Sale of Goods act where the car is not fit for purpose.

Hi didn't get mechanic to check car did Cartell check, had fsh checked and got car nct'd prior to sale- yes 1st need proper diagnosis then will speak to garage about issue. IMO they need to rectify any issues and make sure car is ok afterwards at the moment it is not. Got warranty As part of deal to buy car .

Feck that. Don't let it drag out .

I knew dealers that bought mapfre warranties when they knew the car was going to give trouble and didn't want to cover it themselves.
