Alternative to Stonework

Our house was built 4 years ago, with the frontndoor porch and bay window left for stonework to be done.

As with a lot of things, its fairly costly so I'm looking for alternatives, if therebare any. The window sills are sticking out so just to redo the plastering wouldn't look great.

I was thinking about the pebble effect plastering...but its a bit old fashioned.

Has anyone used Stone cladding/veneer. If so, is there much coat savings in terms of material/labour as opposed to using local stone

Very little in terms of saving. Where the cost of stone is cheapish the labour for a top stone mason is alot due to the time needed on each stone. The cladding is alot more expensive but you need that same top stone mason to put it up but he does'nt need the same time on the cutting off the stone. The best lads will make the work look good so paying the extra money for the right lad is worth it. Plus, if your cills are in, the stonework is probably the only option unless you put external insulation on it and plaster that over.

Do not skimp on stone because its what gives the house its look. Stone venner is awful looking IMO. You can spot it a mile off and more times than I can remember, it pops off. Yes stone masons are a bit pricey but when done right, they are worth their weight in gold. We got one to do work for us and very good at what he does. We were going to go for the venner because of costs (even thou we knew it can fail) but we just bit the bullet and went for more cost for the stone.
