Part-worn tyres

    Hi

Just back from the NCT ...

In June I replaced both front tyres. Got a company who deals with part-worn tyres to replace them for me.

I was away all of July and brought the car for NCT today. Since the tyre being replaced the car has been driven about a week in total.

I got a PASS/ADVISORY on my Offside Front tyre today as the tyre is more than 6 years old.

The garage states that their tyres are NCT approved and I suppose that's right. Was an approved tyre and neither did it actually fail. I feel disgruntled however.

My question is - do I have a right to be. I feel like calling the garage in the morning and giving them a piece of my mind but I'm not sure how the part-worn business works and if they have actually provided me with sub-par service. Would I look like a fool calling up to complain?

You don't really have grounds for complaint, partworns are a minefield I got one for my last car and it was 10 years old.

The car did pass the test though.

Yeah I acknowledged that in my first post.

It won't next year though presumably.

I had an advisory on one wheel being over 6 years old. Never changed it no advisory following year

    It will pass.

And yeah in my experience most partworns are over 6 yrs old. That doesn't automatically make them rubbish though.

Most part worns are over 6 years old anyway, as I discovered on my old car at the NCT. Never bothered me since they were 30 each and better then the chinese ones on before that.

For as long as the tread depth remains above 1.6mm it will continue to pass the NCT.

You have no grounds for complaint IMO.

Not a DIY question, moved to main forum.

An advisory for over 6 years means only that. Minimum thread depth is the important factor. It will continue to pass until the threads wear down.

I had a yoke with >6yo tyres on it. Passed the test many years with just a note from the tester every year.
The tyres were good but had been sitting in a garage for ages. No cracks or nothing.

Providing the condition of the tyre (tread / sidewall) meets the requirements of the test it will pass whether it is one year old or twenty years old, the age of the tyre exceeding six years is only an advisory matter.
