Hi- couple of q's about buying from a dealer. (used car - around 04 or 05)

Q1 = car is out of tax. so should i insist on the car being taxed before
i buy and then wait for change of ownership to come through and i can tax it myself?

    Q2 =
NCT is due on this vehicle in less than 6 months. how do prospective
handle this with regard to buying? any advice . i want to insist that
the dealer puts the car through thr NCT for me in six months as part of the deal.
is there a procudeure to follow with this. must this be stated on a written receipt or somewhere? or is it a verbal agreement, simply. any advice appreciated.
    Q3
INSURANCE. if car is owned by a dealer, how long would it take to get it insured.
this transfer of ownership come through befor ei can insure the car in my name?
again, any tips and advice would be highly appreciated!
    THANKS P

    What car is it?

Tax it yourself when you get the logbook back. Unless you can bargain for some tax to be included in the deal.

Again, you'll have to bargain with the dealer, but imo, you should get the car checked out by your own mechanic to make sure it is sound before buying.

The day you buy, you can ring up your insurance company and change the cover to your new car.

    OK thanks..
but my next question is =
if i am not covered by insurance to drive to my mechanic, am i covered? silly question i know, but i guess its my risk.

secondly, i bought from the same dealer before but never saw the log book.
do they sometimes do this online ?(dealers)
if so what do i need in writing? can i get a copy of the signed log book ?
can i send it off myself or does the dealer post it?
how do i know he has done that?

any advice for this deal...should i insist to see the log book and should it hve the previous owners name or the dealers name?
    thanks again!

If you're not covered to drive other cars then obviously you cannot drive it to your mechanic. You'll have to ask your mechanic to collect it, or get someone who can drive to take it to them.

Dealers do not show up as a registered owner on the log book. Legitimate dealers have a code that is issued to them that allows the log book to be temporarily transferred to them until they sell the car on. Donedeal side of the road type sellers masquerading as private sellers are a different kettle of fish and tend to incorrectly get the log book from the previous owner and then get you to sign/send it out yourself so that their is no trace of them on it.

Some dealers have the ability to transfer ownership online, others don't and need you to sign the old log book before they send it off to Shannon. The seller/dealer is not to give it to the new owner.

If you had trouble from this dealer getting ownership transferred to you do you really want to be buying from them again?

    Q2.

If you want a longer NCT, you could ask them to put it in early.

Look up "voluntary early testing". http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Your-Vehicle/Your-Vehicle-/NCT/Voluntary-Early-Testing/

You need to get the NCT done early if that's possible (see previous post above) but there's no way that even an honest and upstanding dealer is going to give you a guarantee that the car will pass the NCT 6 months down the line - what's to stop you driving the crap out of the car in the meantime and then it fails on suspension, broken coil spring, bald tyres etc?

A dealer can give you a warranty against defects in the car when it's sold to you, it's unreasonable to expect him to give you any kind of warranty as to it's condition after you've had it for 6 months.
