What Year Will The Car Be?

Hey there, i bought a cheap run around car in Southern Ireland yesterday.

I hope to register the car in Northern Ireland this week.

The car is a 2002 Clio as per Irish log book and the car registration plate. I noticed that the service book has a pre inspection check / stamp from Renault dated in 2001.

I called Renault and they said that the car is a 2002 as that's the date the warranty started (when it was registered).

However, a few of my friends have said that the car will be registered as a 2001 in Northern Ireland, and others have said it will be a 2002? Can anyone confirm what year my car will be registered as in Northern Ireland please.

    Thank you,

    Jane

It'll be the same year as when it was first registered.

Thank you. Have you ever experienced this before?

The previous owner has sent the log book with by details to the Department of Transport so i am waiting for them to arrive here.

When it comes over to the UK government, what do they look for / use in terms of deciding what year the car actually is.

the Taxbook basically. I think you should have been handed the log book rather than have it sent off. At least that's what the procedure is coming the other way. I doubt the Irish DoT will register it at a Northern Ireland address

Thank you. I'll contact the previous owner to see if he has sent it off yet?

When you refer to the Tax book, do you mean the log book?

The car most likely went out to the customer in early January 02, so the PDI was probably done before the lads finished up before Christmas, hence the stamp. That is irrelevant to when it was registered. The car is an 02. If it had sat in the dealers stock till the start of 03 before being registered, it'd be an 03.

Thank you for your help. It is strange that some of my friends, even those who are in the motor trade up here say it will be registered as an 01.

It depends on the date registered as UK reg doesn't start in January.

If the car was registered before 28th February 02 it would be a 51 plate in mainland UK. If it was registered after March 1st it would be an 02 plate

Not sure how that would affect a NI plate as I don't think you can identify the age from the plate, but as far as insurance, resale etc it is 2002

at this end of market it really wont matter 2001 or 2002

The date of first registration that appears on the RoI paperwork.

I'm not sure about UK, but some countries actually use "Date of manufacture" and such date is included in registration document.
In Ireland such thing exists in VRC as well under field B.2.
However I don't think they ever bother to enter real value there - they just match it to car reg which originates from date of first registration.
F.e. I once had a mondeo which had date of first registration on 2nd January 2002.
It's obvious in such case, that this car couldn't be manufactured in 2002, but in VRC field B.2 stated 2002.

I know the NI system is different from GB, does the plate change on Jan 1st or some other time. If you had been importing into GB, it would be a 51 irrespective of whether Dec 31 2001 or Jan 2 2002.

The NI system changes when the numbers run out not at a set time iirc. Same as the pre 87 system here.
