Is social media going too far?

Just seen this. They can't be serious?

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/04/technology/facebook-loan-patent/

Here's how it would work: You apply for a loan and your would-be lender somehow examines the credit ratings of your Facebook friends.
"If the average credit rating of these members is at least a minimum credit score, the lender continues to process the loan application. Otherwise, the loan application is rejected," the patent states.

I don't have a Facebook account, never have - personally I regard Facebook as the Aldi of the internet - but stuff like this must make some think that maybe they might want to get ever more careful about their accounts or signing up in the first place?

Is this going too far now? When you think about it if a decision like this was made on such a stupid basis as your "friend" connections it could actually destroy your life.

It's obviously too exclusive and beyond the OP's means.

Good value? What an odd statement.

It's the Aldi of the internet... German, lots of packaged meats... freezers... timed checkout process.

Do you expect us to draw you picture?

I'm not sure Aldi was every "cool".

But ok I get it, you are saying that facebook is not cool anymore.

The Aldi of the internet really. I don't have FB either opened an a/c years ago and then just could not be asred - for that reason I regard them as the Dunnes of WWW - if I was forced to make supermrket comparisons of websites.

It sounds like a gimmick. So if there aren't enough people that fit their criteria, what do the do?

Answer A - keep all the money under the bed.

Answer B - rewrite their criteria.

It wasn't during the celtic tiger but then when so many became collectively poor it suddenly became popular.

Ironically if something as daft as the proposal above actually was done then those same people (with FB accounts) might struggle even more. Then you are in to Lidl territory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,653 ✭✭✭✭amdublin

Ok please!!!!!! Less of the mention of Dunnes, Aldi and Lidl!!!!! I am completely and utterly confused!!!!

This is where social media crosses the line in to something that could actually effect your everyday life. Facebook is in a hole because it is over valued and they need revenue streams so they are coming up with ideas that more and more encroach on your personal life (because where else do they go?) in the hope of getting more money for it. Presumably the idea here is they sell this service to banks or insurance companies.

So I can buy this facebook thing in Aldi? What kind of a book is it exactly?

Board of my local Credit Union were refusing to to approve me a loan recently but as a last ditch effort I mentioned that 60% of my posts on Boards have been thanked and they all looked at one another, laughed and said: "Well, why didn't you say so?" and stamped it granted. Tis excellent so it is. (They check the prison forum though, so be mindful of that).

You haven't taken the Aldi challenge obviously!

I would have said it was more like a €2 shop...mostly full of crap and cheap knockoffs with the odd useful purchase.

Facebook have 1.5 billion monthly users and are struggling to monetise them to justify their share price. Expect more shady **** like this in the future from them and their ilk...

If Facebook were like Aldi, then it would be a pretty amazing site. I think what the OP means is that Facebook is the St. Bernard own brand of the Internet.

If you live within your means, partly by doing frugal shopping instead of being snobby towards cheaper merchants you might find you don't need loans.

Yeeah, calling bull**** on this one. It's impractical, as well as seeming to require some wild theorising in the original article.

If Aldi is Facebook, whats Google Plus? Xtra Vision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,476 ✭✭✭Riddle101

I just think of all those people who when they first set up their facebook profiles, sent loads of friend requests out to everyone, even random people they didn't know all because they thought it made them look cool to have a high friend count on their profile. You'd see people with hundreds possibly even thousands of friends listed on the profile. Well I guess they're all laughing now because they're probably going to have a boat load of credit to their name what with all the friends they have.

Why is there such hatred of FB on boards???

    then it would be discontinued...

Elitism - they all pretend not to have FB accounts.

    That's a class OP.

Nobody care what its about, the Aldi of the internet, memorable stuff.

    'Elitism'??? I don't think so...
At least with FB, one knows for the most part, who one's conversing with.
Not too many anonymous cowards on FB in my experience.

This post entitled "Facebook is ubiquitous, but has a reputation for low-quality content. It's become the Walmart of social media." is currently #16 on the front page of Reddit, maybe thats what OP is on about, bit of a coincidence anyway, I only saw them both 5 minutes apart...

In that case what you need to do is, before you apply for a loan go onto Facebook and de-friend all the bums from your friends list.

There's a lot of sites/apps out there that are market leaders, not because they're anything special, just everybody uses them, sheeple basically.

Twitter seems more influential, the patron saint for the perpetually outraged.

Do you not think people are drawn to the one that fits their needs, ticks all the boxes, the one their friends are on so they can interact with?

What's the point being the cool hipster on Google Plus interacting with no one???

I dont do any of them because none of that really bothers me, old skool.

Seriously its a social media site, why so drfensive?

A lot on here would have no friends to add so consider it a waste of time. Those with friends and have no fb account would most likely hang with the similarly minded people therefore live equally happy lives without said account. I enjoy it

    You don't need loans .

Get the dole, get a council house . And then buy all your food on Facebook
