Alcohol requirements for a party: calculation

Have some people coming over for drinks tonight for herself's birthday. How much alcohol would you think is appropriate for approximately 25 adults, 70:30 women:men?

I'm in charge of alcohol, I don't know if I've calculated for enough alcohol: 10 bottles of wine, 2 slabs of beer, 2 bottles of vodka, and 1 bottle of whiskey. Is that about right?

I'm figuring people will probably bring wine anyway (that's what you do at drinks parties, isn't it?) so that's also factored in.

The women who are coming are mainly moderate drinkers, some of their boyfriends would be heavier drinkers.

I still have a few hours to get in more supplies... ideas? Is anybody numerate able to come up with some kind of calculation/ equation for this kind of thing?!

Damn licencing laws mean that if I do run out of alcohol, it will be too late to nip out for fresh supplies.

That sounds like plenty. People will bring more with them, as you've said. What's your split on the wine? I'd go 60:40 or even 70:30 in favour of white.

Don't forget mixers for the spirits. And plenty of ice.

If I was getting anything else and that is IF (you have plenty) I'd get more beer...

Don't forget your mixers and some limes. If you were going real sophisticated you could do thin slices of cucumber with tonic (and vodka and gin)

    Enjoy!

Do you need to hire/buy cheapo glasses?

No I have the loan of some glasses thankfully.

Thanks amdublin, we have lots of ice, I was going to keep the spirits simple, but the cucumber is a great, easy idea. Have limes and lemon and all that jazz needless to say.

I automatically go 50:50 when buying wine; you're right, there should be more white. But I'm sure a few people will bring white to rebalance it.

    Glad you like that idea!

You can also do a vodka and 7up and a stick of cucumber - the cocktail "Falling Water"
    Lovely and refreshing!

You should get some straws if possible.

Assuming 7 blokes drink 6 cans each, you are short there.

18 women having one Vodka from a 750ml(22 normal shots in a bottle) bottle will leave 4, so they can have 2 vodkas each and 1 whiskey :) Prolly short there too.

No clue about wine seen people drink a bottle to themselves in a very short time.

The beer is the one I was most worried about, most of the guys are also wine drinkers so I'm expecting they will just mix drinks.

Still, as the above poster said, leftover beer will always have a home. I'll get some more. And straws!

    I'm on my way already!

Lol. I do like doing bar at parties but you always need to keep things as simple as possible. And Falling Water satisfies that brief.

What brand of beer did you get OP? And I presume they are cans? You might need some Bulmurs as well?

Well we ran out of spirits, but there was (surprisingly) a small amount of leftover beer and, I think, three unopened bottles of red wine. I would have ran out of beer if I hadn't got that extra slab (beers were Heineken and Carlsberg btw, yes boring but safe).

The cucumber went down a treat, thanks to amdublin for those tips; perfect, easy accompaniment for lime and mint, without being complicated or time-consuming.

If anything, we ran out of finger food quite early, and napkins. Thankfully that wasn't my domain.

Thanks for all the tips guys, my head is banging today, but mission accomplished: we had a great time and we didn't run out of drink \o/

The cucumber garnish in a gin drink comes from Hendricks gin as they add it while distilling.

    Glad the party went well

    Nope.
They add cucumber and rose essence after distilling.
Hendricks cannot be described as a London Dry Gin or Distilled Gin for that reason.
