BMW 520d 2103 Loud exhaust like sound

    Hello anyone out there,

    I have a 131 520d bmw Efficient dynamics model.
    Great car, economical, comfortable etc but at about 6 months old it developed a noise similar to loud muffled hole in exhaust. Not there all the time but getting more frequent. mentioned to BMW dealer during service and spent half a day supposedly looking at the issue but didn't find anything .
    any one else out there with a similar issue.

    Is it when the car is accelerating or when at stop or both? Is air con on at same time or not, try to rule out things first, sounds like it's not a hole as if it was it would be pretty much all the time.

    Probably the DPF regeneration. Happens every couple of hundred miles. Sometimes far more audible than other times. Identical to if you had a hole in the exhaust.

    thanks for the replies.

    Very noticeable when in 3rd gear and ever so slightly accelerating. again noticeable on motorways when accelerating . Can also be heard while cruising but not on deceleration. Doesn't appear to effect the performance of the car but when driving in 3rd gear in built up area with drivers window down its a noise that just shouldn't be coming from such a car and resembles a hole in exhaust. Is it normal for DPF regeneration to make such a noise or is the noise the sign of an issue ?

    HI, I have the exact same issue (sound) during DPF described. I know its DPF regeneration in progress, but did you work out how to reduce the noise? I have 520d F11.
