A few months ago my daughter finally got a new job after a long time on the dole (very long time) and we are all delighted. However she is on a weeks holiday now and I said she has an extra day off for the August bank holiday, but she said she doesn't because the shop she works for is open 7 days a week and she is back in work on Monday. Am I right, or is her employer taking a liberty here?

You're right that she is owed an extra day. But the employer is not necessarily taking a liberty.

If she worked the bank holiday, then her employer has a few choices about when to give her leave in lieu. Most likely the extra day has been added to her leave balance, and can be taken at an agreed time - not necessarily next Monday.

What she should do is ask her employer what her leave balance is now. If she's only been working for a few months, then she may have only earned a weeks leave so far.

Thanks. It didn't make sense to me that retail staff wouldn't get the same Bank Holiday entitlement as everyone else. She didn't work this Bank Holiday as she was already on her weeks' leave, and I thought she was going back to work on Tuesday but she said no, its Monday. Appreciate the information, I will pass it on to her.

In that case it would only be seen as 4 days leave taken surely.

Yeah its 4 days holidays but she has to go in on monday unless she's rostered off.
