    Hi,

Will the Mayo v. Donegal game this Saturday be shown on RTE, or is it only shown on Sky Sports?

Sky have the rights to show 2 of the quarter finals, Saturdays games are those games.

I thought from this round it was shared coverage.

I get giving them provincial and qualifier rounds exclusively but its absolutely ridicules that quarter finals are restricted.

To think these lads are out there playing exclusively on Sky Sports and not even getting paid.
Nobody is going to pay the massive Sky subscription for a few random GAA games either, may work for the Premiership but the same volume of games aren't present in GAA.

It just forces people into the pubs, which is ironic given that drinks promotion of events is taking centre stage.
I had to go watch the Galway/Derry game in a pub a few weeks back even though I didn't want to have a few... Ended up costing e15.

It's shared for the semis and final.

I knew it was at one point and assumed it was now.
Went to the guide to record on Sat before quickly realising.
Don't remember it last year but maybe id less interest in those pairing.

I think its bad form anyway.
As I said, qualifiers and some provincial are fine but not high stakes games.

Sky had the Dublin 1/4 final day last year too.

Dont know why people are getting angry now - this was known as part of the deal. Sky hardly came in for nothing

It's the most shameful thing the GAA has ever done. I've been a gaa supporter all my life and I've only ever missed two Championship matches in 35 years. I would go to most home league games and the occasional away league game. I have spent thousands and thousands of pounds and euro in that time for my love for the game. Since the end of the 2013 season and the beginning of the sky coverage I have not gone to a single match. I will not cross the threshold of a gaa ground again.

If you loved the game, you would still attend matches.

Gaa is all I have but I will not support them financially ever again.

Just because of the sky deal? Seems a bit drastic....

Really. Seems like a pretty minor things to throw out 35 years of fanatical support for.

It is drastic but I was left with no choice.

Selling off the tv rights to a foreign broadcaster for profit is not minor. It may sound ott but I get by.

I don't get this. If you go to the games why does what tv channel they are on bother you?

Sky have exclusivity on a small number of games. Many of those games would not have been televised otherwise. The gaa gets some money, more games get televised.

What do you want, for the organisation to run at a loss?

If you have UPC, you can ring them up the day before the game and get them to add the Sky sports package to your account. After the match, ring 'em up & take Sky off your account. You won't be charged the full month rate. You will only be only be charged the pro rated amount for one day of service, which will be 1/30th the monthly rate. I think it works out a about 1.25 euro per day, which isn't exactly breaking the bank. Unfortunately, you will probably be charged a down grade fee, for taking Sky off your account. Last time, I did that, it was only a fiver, but I think it has since gone up a bit since.

All in all, it's not as great as getting it all for free on RTE, but at least you aren't having to cough up for expensive monthly subscriptions. I did that last year, as the Dubs v Monaghan qf was only on SKY. I went to the game, but I wanted to be able to watch it back later.

If you don't have UPC, then you are SOL. Sowwy !

It's completely over the top. Your missing out on hours of enjoyment and why? Because RTÉ and TV 3 though they could low ball the GAA as they reckoned they would never sell to sky. The quality of the coverage is excellent and you can see RTÉ reacting to sky's coverage.

The sky coverage has been nothing but positive.

Go to the match or go to the pub to watch it

Thanks for your concern lads but I am highly principled in that regard.(God that sounds corny)

There are 32 counties in Ireland. I don't go to all their matches but it was great to watch them on a Sunday afternoon. There is no going back from this sky deal it's the slippery slope from here on in unfortunately.

But before Sky came along, GAA games were not exclusive to RTE. Games were on TV3 and Setanta too & they are stations that you either have to pay for, or you have to be signed up to a package with a cable company to get.

I'm not sure what the principle is that was broken by sky or where it came from . I mean rule 21 and 42 didn't break you.

Did you walk into a gaa ground all those years ago and say to yourself that if the gaa ever sold the rights to a English (non bcc) company you'd walk away?

Sky don't have any exclusive Sunday games. Any games on a Sunday will be on rte.

What exactly is the principle you cannot deflect from?

I'm not going to go over and over this. I've already explained why and that's it, I have nothing more to say on the matter. Please don't get the hump with this reply but I'm out of this conversation.

The OP is asking about the Mayo V Donegal game, which is on the Saturday.

I know, but I think the OP was making general point about enjoying watching inter county GAA games, for free, on a Sunday afternoon, on RTE, as that is when most of them tend to be on. It just so happens that the specific games that he is asking about this weekend, are on Saturday evening. But it doesn't detract from his over all point.

You've stopped going to GAA games because of the Sky deal? That's just daft.

You could just go to the game?

I'm not taking the piss, but I haven't bought a Lee child book since Tom cruise was cast to play the 6'4 Jack reacher character. Fair to you, we all get a bit more peculiar as time goes by.

That said, I still read them all. There are ways to have your cake and principles at the same time. :)

I haven't had a TV in over 5 years, lived on 2 other continents, and was still able to watch almost every gaa match live...ways and means people.

I find it bordering on absurd that someone as dedicated, passionate and affected by GAA as you claim to be (welcome to the forum by the way) is only realising this now.

Where we're you last year when the Dublin quarter-final was only on Sky?

Pull the other one old stock.

Thread Locked - Thread has gone way off-topic. Game is on Sky.

Also just a general reminder that current legislation in Ireland makes it illegal to host information on how to by-pass copyrighted material. Forum Charter is clear on this.
