Just wondering if anyone has had their car stolen after thieves stuck a gps tracker on it to follow the car's movements?

Not personally but yes. But it was a seriously high end motor and in the States. I'd say its beyond unlikely here unless you're driving something very desirable.

It happened to a friend recently and I am just wondering how common it is.

    a) Are you sure, and if yes, how are you so sure.. if the car is gone so is any evidence that there was a GPS tracker used?
    b) Give some idea of the car

He probably didn't intend anything by it,
I'm sure he was just surprised at how far they would go.

How did they take the car, did they steal the key from his house after following him home or lift it away?

Keyless entry systems being accessed and new keys coded without the need for the original keys is also common.

To clarify, a friend of mine found a small tracker on the undercarriage of their new Audi and went to the guards. They told him that it was increasingly common thing to happen.

I think they see a nice car out and put tracker on it to follow it home and break in for keys or something to that effect

It was hardly near Blanchardstown, was it? Or did he use a garage near Blanchardstown recently?

Obviously not sure, but they suspect that it was put on at the airport. Why, did something similar happen in Blanch?

All u need now is a smartphone under the petrol flap and you can track a car. High priced cars need to put trackers in nowadays.

Possibly. My housemate had his car stolen a couple of months ago. He found out from a Garda that it was a Lithuanian gang operating from Blanchardstown who stole it. It was a BMW, they parked in an estate for a couple of days, moved it on, stripped it down for parts and shipped them out of the country.

A week before it was stolen, he brought it to a garage in Blanch run by Lithuanians. What *may have occurred was that the people in that garage copied his key, placed a GPS tracker on his car, and stole it the next week. Either that or they followed him home from the garage.

*I'm not saying that the garage had anything to do with it at all. They may be completely innocent. I'm not lumping all Lithuanian people into the category of thieves.

What i DO know, is that it was definitely a Lithuanian gang who stole it, that was confirmed by the Gardaí. It may be a coincidence about the people in that garage or it may be not. We'll never find out, the car was stripped and is long gone now.

Ah I see. Do you know the model of the tracker?? Or just some random chinese yoke?

Not under suspicion from the missus is he ;-)

I'd be interested to see it as well. Your standard Garda isn't going to know what a tracker looks like, it could literally be anything with a circuit board. Granted if its found under the car the chances are high but I'd be keen to see it.

A €50 eBay GSM GPS tracker and some double sided tape onto the inside of a rear bumper is all that would really be needed. I don't think it's all that farfetched to be honest, and makes complete sense when you consider the risk to thieves breaking into houses and demanding keys.

Reminds me about those two lads gunned down at Tesco clearwater fillingstation in finglas.

GPS tracker was placed on the car somewhere, then a hit squad later tracked them down and murdered them. Mistaken identity..

It didn't get as much publicity as I expected.
