Sub-letting disaster

I recently moved into a house with 3 other people (3 weeks ago). The others in the house have only been here about 3 months themselves. I was told about the house by one of the people living there and would be replacing a girl living there for 2 years.I was desperate at the time to find somewhere and didn't really think twice about paying the girl a deposit on the room and moving in.

A few days ago i was told that the lease on this house is in fact up in 2-3 weeks.I was then informed that we are all essentially illegal in the house and the previous tenants never informed the landlord they were subletting.

There was an email forwarded on to us new tenants from the old tenant stating that there will be a moving out procedure( cleaning the house out completely) and that the previous tenants would get their deposits back at end of lease. However, they left the place fairly lived-in, with alot of their possessions still lying around.

Do we need to move out before that date, and be homeless again.Or can we change the names on the lease to our own? We all were left very much in the dark about this all, and stupidly we didn't ask either.Where can we go from here?

Contact the landlord and see what can be worked out.

IMO, there's no reason why you should bother cleaning the place if you aren't getting your deposit back.

Who are you paying the rent to? To the landlord, or to an ex-tenant? If the latter, the entire thing may get messy.
