do I need to have insurance when doing my driving test ?

I won't be using my own car, I won't even have a car, I will be using what ever car is provided at the centre.

Test centres don't provide vehicles for the test you have to supply your own. Best bet is to use the same car that you did your EBT in, as it's insured by the school, and you're used to it's quirks.

Cars aren't provided at the centre, you provide your own car (doesn't have to be owned by you, but you do have to have valid insurance, nct and tax)

How have you got this far without realizing that cars aren't provided at test centers here. Didn't your driving instructor cover the requirements for the test.

I did my test in my mothers car which I wasn't insured in. It had a valid disc but I wasn't insured.

Do NOT do this. It is an astonishingly bad idea. Driving without insurance is a very serious offence. A mandatory court appearance, and (on conviction) 5 penalty points, a fine of up to €5,000, and a possible prison sentence of up to 6 months

Your instructor can let you use his car for the test, you'll be covered under his insurance for it (for a fee of course).

They don't have cars at the test centre.
