Ah lads the absence of the game is not a UPC problem, it's down to the Irish broadcasters not being arsed to show it.

bad news IMO "Denis Buckley trained with Ireland during their week in Galway, Ian Keatley, Dave Foley & Stephen Archer during Cork but none here this week"

Exactly. TV3 have the World Cup rights, they should show the Warm Ups. What's on TV3 at the same time as the match? A repeat of America's Got Talent, an old episode of Glee, a game show hosted by Ray Foley and a repeat of "Celebrity" Tipping Point.

You are quite right. But the absence of the red button IS a UPC problem.

    Meant Sky Box
Works for Pro12 games, when there are games on different BBC Territories (ie, Ulster on NI, Scarlets on Wales and Glasgow on Alba- hitting red button let's you pick what match you wanna watch)

UPC is cheaper and provide faster broadband. I can do without the red button

Going way OT but a) the red button is a bag of shyte 99.9% of the time, it just isn't worth the investment it would require and b) where has it been stated that the match will even be on the red button?

2 posts before yours states the red button allows you to switch between regional BBCs.

I really think that McGrath should be ahead of Healy on form.

I'd be inclined to agree - Healy has been one of our star players over the last few years but I must say I've been hugely impressed with how easily McGrath stepped into Healy's boots following his injury.

Thought he was fantastic in the 6N (good AI's too). I'm a bit bemused by people comparing him on level with Buckley and Kilcoyne to be honest; no disrespect to them as I think they're good players, I just feel McGrath has gone that one step above them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

With McGrath and Kilcoyne (and possibly Buckley) in the background we're pretty well stocked at loosehead, to the degree that I'm not overly worried if we lose Healy because I think McGrath and Killers can hold their own on the world stage, easily...

However, the thing with international test footie is being good enough isn't always enough. You can do well with a good game plan and solid players, infact that's exactly what we've been doing lately as a team, however to win trophies I think you need a few special characters that are capable of brilliance. The guys will push themselves that extra inch, but Healy has that x-factor that you just won't find in McGrath/Kilcoyne/Buckley etc. He may not be on form in the last 12 months but that won't matter because players like Healy will produce something when our backs are up that may set the difference between winning or losing.

He's easily the most dynamic prop in the world imo, if he's fit by the end of August he'll travel, and he'll do so as first choice.

While McGrath has deputised wonderfully, if Healy can find fitness and form (obviously a somewhat significant if), it's a no brainer. He's a game changer in a pack where we don't have too many guys that are capable of busting through tackles and getting that front foot ball that's so hard to come by at test level.

I'd be comfortable with McGrath but he simply doesn't have the dynamism to deliver a performance like the MOTM showing Healy did against Australia in the last RWC.

This. McGrath is rock solid in pretty much every area, but he simply doesn't have the carrying game that Healy has. Between Healy and SOB we've got 2 guys that can get us over the gain line and on the front foot. It's then that you'll see us start to use the offloading game a bit more too I reckon. Missing one or both makes a big, big difference to how we play the game.

Yeah, agree completely. People often forget that just because someone is an adequate replacement doesn't change the fact that in a game that will lost likely be decided by one score, it's one little moment that is the difference between winning and losing, Healy is far more likely to make that moment go our way....

Not too many lads in green can run through and stomp all over Richie Mcaw as Healy did V the Kiwis in autumn series couple of years back, Healy would make world fifteen at loose head when fully fit, thankfully we have very good back up but none are in Healy's class.

Interesting bit of behind the scenes here from the BBC. Looks like we will be naming a fairly experimental team also:

Laughed at this quote "There was a cynical side of me that did feel like saying we were going to leave it open." Such a bollox, gas stuff.

Interesting. within that 22 there are quite a few players that even at their prime wouldn't make it into an Irish team currently, some maybe not even the squad?

John Hayes would be third choice prop at best I'd say, what do you think Thomond?

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭Some Yoke

It does show an increase in depth from then to now anyway, McCarthy and Ronan in the backrow is a lot different to having options like Murphy Henry and Henderson to slot in. Our centre back up is probably better too maybe? I did like wallace as a 12 though. We lost all 4 warmups, maybe it wasnt such a bad thing if it helped us come under the radar a bit although that would be hard to do now as back to back 6n champs. It was a tough time for O'Leary, Wallace, Fitz and Jones (Better then or now?) and hopefully we wont have players in that unlucky bracket this time around

That was totally experimental. Only two of kidneys starters in the 23.

Just on the Healy thing, on form the guy is outstanding but it's worth pointing out that he hasn't been on form for a little while now, and coming back from injury/surgery won't help in that regard.

Yeah he looked very subdued after the 6N and even the fact that McGrath kept him on the bench would tell you everything wasn't 100%.

Hopefully it was because he was carrying the injury and that's now resolved.

Ah he had a massive massive injury early in the season, sort of thing you struggle to come back from and that really impacted his fitness for the rest of the season.

That said, he has such powerful assets that you would want him to have every chance to get back into it.

People don't even mention the sheer pace of the guy much, I don't like posting it even though it's a great try - but look who is closing in on Marmion here, not many props remotely capable of that kind of acceleration and pace:

Does anyone know of any bars in clontarf/Raheny or dublin that will be showing the game?

Well I'd say Clontarf Rugby Club will be showing it, I'd say Harry Byrne's will also show it... Maybe the Yacht, not sure tho.
