Recommend a mulching lawnmower

I've a decent sized back garden and at the moment I have a 3in1 Snapper lawnmower which is fairly good but when mulching it has a habbit of getting clogged where the mulching plug sits.. bit of a design flaw I guess. Anyways, it gets fairly bleedin annoying as I have to constantly turn it over and clear it out.

Originally I went for it as I liked the idea that I could collect grass also, this doesn't make sense as I only get about 2/3rds down my garden before I have to empty the bag. Last time I did it it took me 2.5hrs to cut the lawn. When mulching I can get it done in around 45-60mins. So I'm looking at getting a dedicated mulcher.

Has anyone any recommendations? Needs to be self propelled and 20"+ deck. Can't be a ride on as the garden is fairly narrow at one end so I'd spend half my time doing 3 point turns.

I was in the exact same position as you. Like you I have a large garden, it takes/took me 2 1/2 hrs to mow with a 20" 2in1 push mower. The mulch on it was crap. I didn't feel the garden was big enough to need a ride-on (I also didn't have the storage space).

I had some criteria like you. I wanted, 21" minimum and must be self propelled. I also didnt want the mower to collect grass at all, the garden is way to big for that. I wanted side discharge and mulch only. I reckon side discharge will only be used a few times at the start of the cutting season then it will be mulching for the rest of the cutting season. If I keep on top of cutting (weekly) I can get my time down to 1 1/2 hrs.

I looked at lots of options, including a 30" wide cut mower called the Toro Timemaster 30" (which is €1500 or so) but in the end I went with a Honda HRS 536. It took a while to decide to spend the big money on a good mower it but I am very happy I did. I know Honda have a great reputation for their mowers and they have a good dealer network for spares / servicing. I did however end up get my mower in the north as I couldn't get one in Dublin or surrounding areas.

I have this for a similar type garden. Got it for about €950. I seen similar ones with a Honda engine while I was looking for the link. Honda are better according to a lot of people on here

It has served me well this year. It is very quiet. It can cut damp grass and does a decent job even if the grass hasn't been cut for 2 weeks. Its also easy to clean. You can flip up the front and have the back handlebar flat on the ground to get underneath.

The drive is on the front wheels and grass sticks to the axle so you need to clean it every time

Posted this in the great big lawnmower thread. Can't believe more people don't have dedicated mulching mowers

I got this one because a local dealer could get it for me and then I have some comeback if something goes wrong. The Honda engine is probably better but I can't see much of a problem when you are using a pro mower for private use

That looks a better deal, the only difference I can see is the engine and variable speed, everything else is identical.. I've had a briggs & stratton engine on my last two mowers and never had any issues..

I had a few issues with smaller briggs engines but not this one. Was nearly done with them. Only got this because I wanted the mower and couldn't get a Honda engine one.
