Friday night the my car breaks down. The tow man thinks the timing belt went and the engine is wrecked. Does any know if the 08 focus tdci is an interference engine or non interference as it could make a big difference in the cost.

    Which engine? 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 litre?

    Thanks Pvo.....thats me fecked.

Get the mechanic to do a compression test first. Might be fine.

The 1.8 tdci is 100% inteference and the timing belt is known to fail on these engines very early.

90k miles up on it. The Nct is in two weeks time so was going to bring it to the garage Wednesday to change the fecking belt.:(

Dont bother with a compression test if its a 1.8 tdci.

The only question now is whether or not the whole engine is fecked or not you may get the head pulled off it and see are the pistons broken or not.
If they arnt you will be very lucky and get away with about 15/1600 euro.
If they are damaged you can probably double it.

Even though it's an interference engine it doesn't necessarily mean damage was done. If the driver clutched in as soon as the timing belt snapped it's possible that no damage was done. For all the time it takes for a compression test, it's definitely worth it.

Waste of time but hey dont take my word for it.

Also there is a 99% chance its the wet belt thats broke so by the time you do that and put the cam belt on to do a compressin test its a waste of time.

The odds of someone clutching the same millisecond that the belt broke would be similar to winning the lotto.

If the belt broke when idling in traffic, there may be a very slim chance of just valve damage, but if it broke when motoring it wont be nice. A piston banging valves at 30+ times a second (2k rpm) will not be pretty, even if it happened for a few seconds.

If the wet belt fails on one of these then forget about compression tests etc. The engine will be in sh1t. Valves and pistons. €3500 on average to repair.

The only other option is a second hand engine, but that's still going to cost €2k+, 1k engine, full service kit/belts/labour.

More like €2k for a secondhand engine these days.

Last time we had one in the cheapest secondhand engine we could find was €2200.

Had one a few weeks ago the wet belt went on and yourman got away with six valves.
Yourman must have said a few decades of the rosary or something :-)

On my last service with Ford I asked this very question about the belts in my 2008 Mondeo 1.8 TDCI. The mechanic told me it was grand up to 200,000km and that I'd need to get both the wet belt and timing belt done then. At 145,000 now and getting worried reading this thread. His quote at the time for both belts done was €750 which sounded very spicy.

Get them done now dont wait.

€750 is about the going rate to have both belt kits replaced along with oil pump gasket , fuel pump gasket and crank shaft oil seal.

Fair enough if that is the going rate. I didn't really know or have anything to compare it to. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice....and yea it would cost me the bones of 3 gs to get it done...my other option...sell the car. How do I price up a car with a wrecked engine.

Done Deal under the damaged/repairable's section.

Have you asked the garage (who have it now) how much they would offer for the car "as-is" ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭celticcrash

They said 750...bit than I meet an old friend who said he would give me 2000 for it...he does a bit of trading....at the time I said I would sit on it and wait for an engine...but I think I might be ringing him up.

Too far away for me i would have thought between 1500 and 2000 would be a fair price.

How much are you being quoted to repair it ??

I had an 11 engine for 2000....but I let it slip. 1000 and could be more my mechanic said as belts would still have to be put on.

    +1, 1500-2000 is fair, depending on mileage/condition.
