What is the best - or what are some of the best - German-language films about the Second World War, and the Holocaust in particular?

I always thought Downfall was one if the best German films I've seen. Generation war is also excellent. Both on Netflix

Not quite what you're after but Germany year zero is a really good post world war 2 film for a variety of reasons. By an Italian and it's all neo realist and all of that.

    Das Boot of course.

Is Lore in German? It must be surely, I don't think it's by a German though.

    Downfall has already been mentioned.

Uhm... Shoah is partially in German?

There was a German reenactment of the Wannsee conference if you specifically want a German language film.

There was also an excellent English language version of events. Conspiracy.

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

One of the best films of this year: Christian Petzold's Phoenix is about a Holocaust survivor (Nina Hoss) so changed by her experience that her own husband doesn’t recognise her and even employees her to imitate his wife in order to claim her inheritance. Basically Vertigo from the woman’s perspective.

Also staring Nina Hoss is A Woman in Berlin, about what for a long time was a taboo subject in Germany (and probably still is to a certain extent): what women did to survive post-war, especially in Berlin. Hoss is extraordinary, but I otherwise remember not been too impressed with this at the time.

I loved Cate Shortland’s Lore from a couple of years, though, about the children of a Nazi officer adrift in the war-torn German countryside at the end of the war. The girl forms a complicated relationship with a Jewish boy who helps them. Gorgeously shot. (And for a French and Italian take on a similar women fleeing war plot, see Strayed with Emmanuelle Beart and Vittorio De Sica’s Two Women.)

Another very good film is Elser (13 minutes). I seen this at the Berlinale so I'm not sure if it's been released yet but it's one too keep in mind. Film about another assassination attempt on Hitler before the war. Very good film. Lore as mentioned above is another good one. So is Sarah's key, a French film but on similar lines to what you may be looking for

German made movie,Stalingrad from the early 90s.Its years since I've seen it but one thing that struck me is that its one of the very few WW II movies where they got the soldiers hairstyles exactly right. Those awful looking short back and sides that you'd see old men who grew up in the 40s and 50s sporting. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/
