What fruit/veg do you hate?

I will never come to terms with cauliflower being edible or parsnips being in existence.
Vile, vile things and I will never like them.

When it comes to fruit, I can't stand Golden Delicious apples..horrible boring apples in a boring shade of green, with a boring non-flavour and no juice.
And I don't care what anyone says; blueberries have no flavour.
They're just little balls of blandness.

As soon as I saw the thread title I clicked in to say cauliflower.

And I agree on parsnips and golden delicious.

    I like blueberries though.

3 out of 4 ain't bad though OP.

To add my own, I can't stand pears.

Cucumber is just blandness to me, but I know some people can taste it properly.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Carrots and turmits, can't abide either, turn my stomach in fact. Parsnips too, accidentally ate a fried parsnip slice once thinking it was a chip, by the hokie I nearly died there and then.

    Love ALL the green veg.

Kale. Ate some last week and not only is really vile, but it gave me thundering scutters for the whole afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭Eutow

Onions and watermelon. Can't stand the former, the smell, the texture when you bite into it, the taste. Vile things. They even try to destroy your eyes, enough said.

    Watermelon, just hate the stuff.

Courgettes and aubergines are vile. I can't think of any fruits I wouldn't eat.

I used to hate pears but then I discovered you're meant to let them ripen and then...Holy Jesus, but the juice!
    The FLAVOUR!
It was like tasting a pear for the very first time (*feels like Robin Beck*).

Cucumbers are a strange bunch of lads, now.
On their own or in salads, I like 'em.
But in a sandwich? Forget it; they overpower everything.

Celery is the only one. I love the rest!

    Cannot stand celery. So vile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭KKkitty

Fruit: Kiwi, because my teeth go funny looking at it.
Veg: Celery, because I have never liked the taste.

If I was to pick the three most neutral and unassuming foods I could think of they would be celery, watermelon and kale:confused:

Watermelon always LOOK like they'll taste all raspberry-ish and tangy, but they're literally just watery.
    The taste lets it down.

Celery, to me, is peppery and I'd only use it in cooking.
I tried it raw and felt like a baby sucking a lemon...spat it out.

I've never had kale but it looks fierce curly and would catch in your throat?

Watermelon has to be one of the most disappointing foods of all time. You look at it and say "this is going to be amazing" and then... meh.

The watermelon we get in this country is indeed crap but I've had deliciously tasty watermelon abroad.

    I do.

I love onion. More flavour when it's raw. Especially white onion.

I've had really lovely watermelon too, it's not all bland

To the celery haters, you can't drink a Bloody Mary without a stalk of celery in it, you might as well down a naggin' and suck a tomato

I eat most fruit and veg but really dislike artichokes. I could manage them in a stir-fry but that's it.

That wood-like stuff they call bamboo shoots you sometimes get in a Chinese meal.

I despise baked beans. Not the beans themselves, but that lurid orange bile that passes for a sauce. Grotesque.

Thankfully I haven't had to eat them in close to 25 years. I just pity the people who do eat them.

I hate pretty much all vegetables, which is partly why my diet sucks. I eat potato (which the food pyramid doesn't count as a vegetable), sweet potato and can stretch to eating peppers (though I still usually pick 'em out). Every thing else veggy can fúck off.

Fruit-wise, I really hate bananas* and peaches. I can stomach apples, oranges, blueberries, grapes and strawberries**. Oh and watermelon's ok. That's about it.
I like raspberry flavoured things but raspberries themselves are too bitter.

This is why I'm fat. :(

*Though I think I saw on QI once that they're technically a herb and not a fruit
**Also technically not a fruit, at least not the red bits anyway; the real fruits are the seeds embedded in the red bits. This may also have been on QI.

Are you trying to win us over, or push us over the edge. Love tomatoes but, not a hope I am putting in my vodka. Celery taste, it is made of ass.

    Brussels Sprouts.

Even the smell of them makes me ill!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Samaris

I'm not very good at eating vegetables, although I love fruit. Cauliflower is just about bearable when buried in cheese sauce, and cabbage needs vinegar. But the worst thing is kale mashed with potato. Hnnghh.

    Love sweetcorn though.

    Celery - sour stringy nothingness.
Beetroot - horrible overpowering crap that destroys your teeth
    Cucumber - tasteless watery mush

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,687 ✭✭✭✭Penny Tration

    Veg - onion.
    Fruit - watermelon.

Aside from those, I'm pretty good with fruit and veg (more than 5 a day is eaten very easily), and can make myself eat any I'm not massively keen on.

I had a watermelon in Corfu once, the things that happened to my insides was something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. If you ever run short of clean prep, a few slices of watermelon will sort you out, turned me off them for life!

    Also - asparagus.

Egg plants/aubergines and Zucchinis/courgettes, fierce dry vegetables.

That reminds me - sloes, what is the point of such a savoury fruit?

The only vegetable I hate is celery.

I love fruit, love vegetables, even green vegetables like sprouts and cabbage. Can't get enough.

I'll probably live till I'm 100, but much of that time will be spent on the toilet, so it sorta cancels out:pac:

That wood-like stuff they call bamboo shoots you sometimes get in a Chinese meal.

Your Chinese meal must be coming from a plastic container with a free order of what passes for prawn crackers thrown into the brown bag.

Good fresh bamboo shoots add a lovely bite to many Asian dishes.

    Haterz.

    There isn't a veg I won't eat.

    Omanomanom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭NOS3

I have improved with vegetables a lot over the last few years. I have grown to like things like brussel sprouts and cauliflower. The only things I can't stand are raw onion, raw red onion and raw tomatoes. All these cooked are lovely, however.

Yeah, and those tasteless water chestnuts - pure bulk agents.

But it's like anything, is properly prepared, grand.

Re celery - it's not designed for the Irish 'fook it in, in big chunks' chef. tiny bits, well cooked, do the trick.

No rasing on broccoli so far, which is great.

Broccoli = steamed. no other way.

    Veg - onion.
    Fruit - watermelon.

    Separated at birth..?..

Have to admit, Kale has me stumped.

How can it be converted to tasty edibility? Anyone know?
