    Hi folks,

Was going to pick up a used car tomorrow from the dealers and forgot to transfer my insurance over. Checked the web and rang the my insurance company and they are closed for the weekend. Have I any options to take the car home ?

    Thanks,

    Cerebis

Try ringing their emergency claim number, they might be able to do it for you over the phone. The other option is to get someone else who has insurance with third party extension to drive it home for you. You cannot drive it yourself as your insurance third party extension will not allow you to drive other cars that you own other than the one listed on your policy. Worse case wait until Monday to pick up the new car.

Could I sign up for new insurance and then cancel the policy on Tuesday // this seems ok ?
    http://www.123.ie/customer-care/before-you-insure/getting-a-quote/is-there-a-cooling-off-period

    - from 123.ie

Yes, there is a 14 day cooling off period on all our Car Insurance policies. These 14 days begin from the start date of your policy, or from the date you receive your policy documents, whichever is later.

If you cancel your policy within this time, you will only be charged the €40 non-refundable set up fee, and if you have used cover, you will only be charged for the number of days you have used. If a claim has been made no refund is due.

Could you pick up the keys, then wait till the insurance is transferred to drive it home?

Your NCB can only be used on one policy afaik unless your existing insurance company allows you to mirror it on another car. So you would have to take out the new policy with another insurance company even short term, you would have zero NCB on that policy.

The easiest thing to do is just wait until they are open again on Tuesday.

Do you have driving of other cars extension?
When you are transferring ownership put the date down for a few days time.
Then technically its not yours for a few days and you can drive it under your driving of other cars extension
