Driving dogs to Spain

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there has experience of taking dogs to Spain. Any info from pet passports to how pets are housed on ferry crossing etc. also, I know you can place a car on a train down thru France, but can you bring dogs on same?

It would be Southern Spain, so a bit of a hike and would need pet friendly lodgings en route.

Both dogs are well used to long(ish) car journeys in Ireland, and enjoy the car.

    Thanks in advance

They need to be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies at least 21 days (if it's the first vaccination) before entering an EU Member State and must have EU Pet Passports - http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/

Good luck with the rest of it.

Hi, thanks for that. At least now I know where to start.

If you are bringing them back from Spain into Ireland you also have to have tapeworm treatment done between 120 hours and 24 hours before scheduled arrival time in Ireland. This must be entered by the vet into the relevant section of the passport (I cannot remember the section number). Check the section to make sure they enter the time as well as the date.

Make sure they have adequate ventilation and water when left on their own in the car.

Bringing the dog to spain next month. Have the pet passport and vet says we are go to go, just wondering about this tapeworm treatment on the way back into Ireland. So do i have to find a vet in Spain?

Requirements have changed in the last few years and I'm not familiar with the new ones.

You can always get the most up to date info here - http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/

Ring them and they will tell you what you need to do.

We travelled to Italy last year, Rosslare to Cherbourg. My dogs are used to being in the van so left them in it on the ferry. If they stay in the vehicle, you're allowed down to visit them twice during the crossing.

The continent is very pet friendly, dogs are allowed in restaurants etc. We got a train through a tunnel from Switzerland to Italy, you stay in your vehicle so dogs are allowed.

There is a new ferry from Ireland to Spain and I believe that dogs are allowed in cabins. It's not cheap but obviously you'll save money on fuel and tolls.
