I'm building up this second hand frame/fork I bought.
    It's a 2002 Cannondale and a Marin Fork.
The headset in the pictures attached is what came with the bike/fork combo when I bought it.

There is a lot of play in the headset, it seems like there may be at least one part missing from the headset or maybe its just worn.

Either way I'm thinking about just replacing the whole thing, it's not something I have much experience in though.

Can anyone tell me anything about the headset in the frame at the moment and what I should be looking at to replace it?

Should the black cups that are there at the moment come out? I didn't want to pull too much in case they are threaded?

Cannondale website no help? I'd say those cups are pressed in from the photo. Use a wooden drift and hammer to gently knock them out (old wooden spoon will do) If it doesn't move then research further - or take it to a LBS. Good luck

looks like a standard 1 1/8 external headset..
cheap as chips and available anywhere including halfords
    easy to fit to.

I just replaced one of those headsets this morning. I'd recommend replacing those bearings with sealed cartridge type. Those balls will fall out and get everywhere. You'll have to replace the whole headset to do this but it's easy.

Double check the steerer diameter on the fork. Modern forks are all 1&1/8 inch but there's a chance a 2002 frame might still be 1 inch. These are slightly harder to find...here's what I got

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ritchey-Scuzzy-Logic-Comp--Headset/dp/B005JAOFFM/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1438451603&sr=8-13&keywords=headset+bearing+bicycle+1+inch

The earlier advice about removing the old cups is accurate. Ideally use a headset press to insert the replacement part. Failing access to that you'll get there with a block of wood and a rubber mallet. A g clamp will substitute also. There are even YouTube clips on homemade headset presses.

    Thanks Lads.
Turns out it is a standard 1 1/8th headset.

Have the top out, bottom is a little more stubborn though.
    Have replacement ordered.

    Thanks.
