Second hand bike - giving it the once over

    Hello all,

In the process of evaluating a second hand bike purchase, carbon frame, decent mix of shimano group set, it's a few years old and has been lying around a shed for a while, there's a bit of minor rust on some nuts and components...

I will give the drivetrain a degrease and clean, and from looking, maybe the brake blocks need changing and possibly a new chain

My question, as I'm not that experienced with maintenance, is how can determine if all is in decent working order, or what else I might need to fix or replace? Is this something the LBS would be able or willing to do?

    Cheers

For a fee, I'm sure they would, because if you do buy it you will probably go to them for a service before it's first use. After that, you'd probably learn how to do the everyday stuff.

how well do you know the seller? why not suggest dropping it into a reputable LBS for a service and once-over, and the cost borne by you if the bike has a clean bill of health, by the seller if it reveals anything concerning?
a typical service would be €30 or thereabouts.

Work friend, so would no problem to agree to something like that... This is what I had in mind, if there's anything too dodgy revealed, i just won't buy it and i'll take the service fee either way. Cheers for the tip.

Good idea, I would bring it them for the service, yes... Know the very basics, but to change a cable or two (or even know if it needs changing) would beyond my ability at the mo'.
