Just a thought from reading the Aer Arann thread. The need for an air route from Dublin to Galway is gone now due to the M6 but what about from Belfast and Cork?

Google Maps has the quickest route right now (Friday night) as 3hr 42min from Belfast to Galway (370 km) and 2hr 37min (198 km) from Cork to Galway. These are the quickest, not shortest routes. Surely there would be some basis for a daily flight from each city, especially Belfast?

I seem to recall manx2 did have a flight from Belfast round about the time of the Cork crash.

I've never managed the run down from Belfast in less than 4 hours...

I would think Luton is possibly the only viable route at this stage. Theres not even buses to Belfast is there? Demand is likely to be low

What way is Galway airport towards general aviation now? I remember a time when landing fees were crazy in an attempt to keep light singles out of there..

Why is Galway too short to accommodate ATR 72s and Q400s?
There appears to be plenty of space west of the runway and the road along the perimeter could be re-routed.
Since the airport is mostly owned by the council CPO for whatever land they need would be only a formality and since they decided to take control of the airport you would think they would have a motivation to improve the airport to funnel more business travelers and tourists in to Galway.
Whether the local authorities should do it or not is another matter but taking ownership of the airport and then letting it wither away confuses me.

I think both Councils are to publish soon what their plans are for the airport.

It's too short because there's a house and business at one end of the runway and a massive dip at the other end. It's also too short because it was built in the wrong place rather than at Oranmore and because the intention was to protect Aer Arann from competition from the likes of Ryanair. Because Aer Arann was part of the local Galway business clique. That didn't work our for them in the end.

Letting it wither away is no surprise. They really haven't a clue what they're doing. Apparently a report just out is recommending it be used as a light industrial park and wait for it 'A film and cultural hub'. Yes movie studios! Stop laughing they're serious. The obvious answer of using it as a general aviation airport doesn't seem to be on their radar at all. Although it was suggested that the runway be kept so the 'Hollywood stars can be flown in'.

Yes this is the kind of la la land that Galway seems to live in.

Culture hubs are all the rage for derelict buildings, didn't ya know! Another studio proposed in Shannon Hangar a while back and Castlebar barracks this week.

The studio idea is obviously coming from Game of Thrones success in Belfast docks. The Aer Arann owned hangar may be thought to have scale for large sets and rich history of sagas.

is it currently owned by Stobart Air or did Galway councils acquire it in airport purchase ?

No its owned by the airport. Last heard they were looking for €75k a year for a hangar. Dream on!

Oh BTW Stobart is still 70% owned by a certain Galway 'entrepreneur'. Luckily Stobart are running the management side.

Don't think so.... That entrepreneur has only 2% left in Stobart. His influence in the company is non existent
