Anyone here use Beclare cross ewes for lambing out.

Considering it here but previous experience of Belclare over 10 years ago was to many lambs and lack of milk, understand society have addressed these issues in recent years. Would really like to use an Irish composite, but just looking for figures on scanning % etc and peoples experience etc...

Wouldn't think they'd be suitable for lambing out, found them soft.

Not a fan of them myself.

Lamb down far too many multiples.

Worked on a place 1st year ewes scanned 2.36 - 2nd yr 2.44 and I think that was including the ewe lambs (300 ewes & 50 ewe lambs)

    Pain in the ass!

    Would you consider Llyen?

What ewes have you got atm?

Yea if you look after them well, they'll flood the place with lambs

Throw up an awful mix of lambs too some like Galways, some like Finns.

My Boss spent his time, taking good single lambs off ewes (who hadn't been getting meal as singles) and putting dwarfs on them and putting Big single lambs - now twins on ewes lacking milk.

Boss thought it was great in fairness - loads of lambs - no early lambs - no singles - loads of lambs for Factory in September/October/November.

And the pet lambs - super job about 40 a year.

I have belclare cross ewes. I don't find them any way soft. I think they are great mothers and a very quiet easy to handle sheep.
My main downside is the lambs dont finish like a suffolk, but you cant have everything i suppose.
