I have the above phone now nearly a year with no issues. My daughter was playing with it recently and whatever she done, what happens now is that when I get a text message there is no sound notification. I have checked settings and the phone volume and everything seems ok. Any suggestions ??

Try going into your messenger app.
I use handcent and I have to open the handcent app and go into its settings then something like Notifications, then sound - where I can set the sound.

Maybe there is something in there to restore your sound?
