    hi all i have a 03 1.7cdti astra van that i just bought a couple of days ago it was driving fine until today when the battery light came on and the power steering stopped working, it sdrove for a while after that but now won't start. After doing a bit of research it seems like the alternator is goosed so i'm wondering how much approx i can expect to pay a mechanic to fix this. also will it start with jump leads so i can drive to the garage about 1 mile away. Thanks in advance for any replies/advice.

    There is usually an electronic fuel cut-off safety valve. You could 'jump-start' it.
    However as soon a you remove the jump leads , the fuel cut-off valve will shut, effectively shutting off the fuel to the engine .[I had a similar problem with a diesel car] {I'm assuming that your battery is flat}

    Charge the battery and that will give you enough power to drive some miles in daylight.

    is that the belt that's on the alternator? if so i think it's ok (as in it's not broken) sorry but i'm not mechanically minded at all!!
