Do I need hardcore

    I am building a 16ft x10ft 4inch deep concrete slab, it's only going to be used to play basketball so is hardcore necessary. if so how much might I need,
    If you could help me out it would be appreciated. Thanks

    Sports like basketball is an impact sport. The ground should be so designed in that way to take account of the consistent impact.

    How are you treating the concrete? Thickness? Rebar etc?
    If you have an engineer designing that maybe he will design the build up material too?

    225 min compacted hardcore. A little reBar would be best.

    I didn't want to quote specific Bryan but if I had of i would have quoted exactly what you said.

    Min 225mm hardcore compacted. (In theory you should get clause 808 to SR 21 Compliant) but may not be 'required' as it's not a building you are constructing.

    I would have then said a minimum of 150mm concrete slab with A393 mesh.

    *if in any doubt ask an engineer for a specific design. Shouldn't cost too much.

    K, Which reinforcement would be easier to brake-up/ dig-out, of you wanted to future proof for other building works? Assuming you site tied the rebar

    To future proof it for other building works, I would probably treat it like a floor plan for a shed or similar. Build strip foundations, rising walls, DPC, radon and pour the slab level.

    Then use that as the court. If the OP wanted to convert to a structure at a later stage then it's just a matter of the walls up.

    Edit - just looking back I quoted A393 in the slab. That may be overkill, I had foundations in my head for some reason. A393 in the strips but the slab maybe A142 or A252 mesh may suffice. But again confirm with an engineer if the design needs to be done and to cover yourself.
