    Hey folks,

Herself has a neat 96 vw polo runaround that appears to need a new clutch... gears slipping / taking longer to accelerate once changing gear with high revs.
    it passed the Nct recently.
how much roughly would a clutch repair cost?

Also, would it be wiser to scrap it and get a different runaround to last the next couple of years?

Change it , later cars are a lot safer too, put the 300 euro clutch cost , towards the next car plus 50 scrap value, although with recent nct it may sell off done deal to a mechanic for 150 or 200 as is .

I would put a clutch into it, hard to beat the car you know.

I agree. If you've owned it a while and it's been good to you, i'd put a clutch in it. Buying another sub €2k car could be a bit of a lottery.

When is the insurance renewal on it? Be worth checking out if it's gonna be refused cover or quoted a ridiculous price next time round.

To replace the clutch kit will be €300-350 or so.

Assuming the car is in good order apart from the clutch then what I always say to people in these situations is that you are better off repairing your own car unless you are going to spend a good few quid and upgrade to a much newer car. Changing one sub €1000 car for another with the idea of saving money or getting something more reliable will very rarely work out well.

€250 would be enough to pay for the job, 2 hours work.

They said they wont increase renewals. Just new quotes.

It's an old design that's 20 years old very soon , safety has has come on a lot in 10 years never mind 20, that would be reason enough to upgrade imho.

    No it's not

In all fairness I doubt, a good garage would even consent to do a job worth more than the car.

If garages are charging huge money to do a simple clutch maybe.

300-350 is the standard price for a clutch on a car like a polo. Its alright saying its "simple" but its still taking up ramp and labour time.

I don't think that's what was implied at all. Some companies are refusing new business but will quote renewals. Which may or may not be realistic numbers.
Many companies appear to be not flat out banning older cars, just giving crazy prices for them.
    It's worth checking.

    Thanks folks.
insurance and tax are dirt cheap, and both have also just been renewed.
I know there's the safety aspect, but we do have another car for the family and long distance.
if I can get it done for sub 350, I guess it'll be worth changing.
    If so, anyone got recommendations?
    Euroclutch in Baldoyle any use?

    Thanks again for feedback.

I think euroclutch are a bit pricey, but no harm getting a quote. I just finished building a website for a place in Santry called Ready Motors and according to their advertising, they are well priced. Could be worth checking out. Site isn't officially launched yet, but you can look at www.readymotors.ie and see if you get a decent quote.

Oh, and don't use the contact form. The owners don't have access to the email account yet.
