Excuse me but I am not very knowledgeable in this area and wanted to know what you thought of the selection of channels at 28°E.

Well, people are generally happy to get all the various BBC, ITV, Ch.4, Ch.5 services for free. You won't get the likes of Sky 1 or Sky Sports.

Is there anything particular you had in mind? Also, in some parts of ROI, free UK channels are also available with a UHF aerial, similar to our Saorview.

I am considering getting the free to view/air dish. I don't mind not having Sky 1 or Sky Sports but in general are the quality of those channels at 28°E any good?

Not sure what you mean by quality: picture quality or programme content?

Anyhow, on the subject of PQ, I should mention that the BBC is the only operator that provides all its high definition sevices for free.

Also should point out that RTE, TV3, TG4 are not available free from 28 east.

Thanks a lot of those channels I am not aware of but can't complain about the quantity. What are your thoughts on them, jd?

TBH I rarely go beyond the reliables. BBC4 can have some great music on at the weekends :)

Yes they do, jd. The channels seem largely all right.

Are you thinking of changing from another TV provider/reception method?

There are 2 options for viewing the free channels from 28°E, a FTA satellite receiver or a Freesat receiver.

A FTA receiver stores the channels as found in any order and you arrange the channels to your requirements, a Freesat receiver stores the channels in a particular order (see the list below) similar to Sky/UPC. The regional UK channels received depends on the UK postcode entered during setup. Freesat also offers a twin-tuner recorder option. The Irish channels aren't available with either option.

The BBC and ITV both broadcast hd for free.

But not all ITV HD channels are FTA like ITV2HD, ITV3HD, ITV4HD, ITV Encore HD. I think that was the point being made whereas all BBCs HD offerings are FTA.

Indeed, & same goes for Channel 4 services, with E4 HD, More4 HD, & Film 4 HD currently being subscription only, if I'm not mistaken.

All the ITV's are clearing in HD the last few weeks.

ITV wasnt mentioned at all in the post i quoted that is why i said both BBC and ITV broadcast hd and also so do one of the channels in the C4 group, also RT is hd if i remember correctly.

Im going off the Freesat platform so maybe im wrong for assuming the OP doesnt just mean receiving channels in via generic FTA.

If you have a Sky HD subscription you will get ITV2,3,4HD ITV Encore HD and Channel 5 HD. These are not on the Sky epg in the republic of ireland but can be tuned in through other channels function on the Sky HD box.

All the ITV's are clearing in HD the last few weeks.

Not all the ITV1 regions are being cleared in HD yet.

It is only some regions available in HD namely London, Granada, Meridian, Central West and then Wales & Yorkshire to come on live after that.

You also have UTVNI & STV in HD from 28.2E as well.

There is also a channel called &tv HD from India that launched from the last week or so.
