Most chilling deaths

Ok, this may be a pretty grim topic but I do want to say this is for the most chilling deaths on screen, i.e. those that left you feeling cold and thinking about it as opposed to the most gruesome where you saw someones head getting burst open or something.

First for me is Alpha Dog:
The scene where the young kidnapped fella gets killed. Thought about it for days afterwards...
The way they were telling him, his new found friends, that it would all be fine, just lie down in the grave. Then a line of bullets up his torso and he's gone. They were in tears. he was terrified, it was so amateurish and completely pointless... Just awful

    Second is Drive:
The scene where Cranston's character gets killed. Again, so cold. "That's it, that's it, it's done"
Like he was trying to reassure him that it was no big deal, it's all over now so don't be scared. And that was from a guy who actually liked him. The grim realiasation that that is it and you have nothing to d but think of it now until you float off...

    shudder....

As gay as this may sound, Patrick swayze in ghost.

Just the way he carries on as if nothing happened and then all of a sudden he sees himself bleeding on the ground. Madness Ted.

Haven't seen it in a while, but remember the scene in Saving Private Ryan were the German soldier slowly sinks his knife into Adam Goldberg's chest creeping me right out.

Can't remember the exact detail but in Schindlers List the germans were constructing a building and a Jewish woman who a highly qualified engineer advised Goeth that the construction was wrong and explained in detail the problem it would cause. He ordered the construction to be restarted as per her advice, and then ordered her to be shot right there. So cold....

The killing that Ed Norton gets locked up for in American History X. Won't give details cor anyone who hasn't seen it but pretty cold-blooded and horrible. Have seen that film a few times and still turn away at that scene.

For me it was the pick axe scene in Carlitos Way, or the Joe Pesci's baseball bat demise in Casino... The latter is one that sticks with me, it's so realistic and the fact the guys are somehow struggling to do the deed makes it even more realistic.

They don't even happen on camera, but the murders in the original Dutch/French version of The Vanishing really disturbed me. It's been imitated several times now (and remade with a stupid happy ending for the US), so I'm not sure if it would have the same impact on today's audiences. But at the time it affected me for a couple of weeks. My viewing of it in the mid 90s coincided with the disappearance of a French student, Celine Figard, in the UK.

Irreversible - that death. That haunted me for a very long time, I've never seen an on-screen death that even comes close for sheer nauseating and realistic brutality.

Several of the deaths in Saving Private Ryan are hard viewing, most notably the medic and the guy who gets stabbed in the heart after an intense struggle.

In Scarface, the scene where he confronts Frank over his betrayal - the tension in that scene in unbelievable and so brilliantly crafted that it's still highly uncomfortable viewing.

Schlinders List - the scene where Fiennes calmly orders a Jewish woman shot after she correctly points out faults in the design of a structure, and later, the nerve-wracking scene where he attempts to shot another prisoner but cannot due to a problem with his pistol.

If anyone watches Boardwalk Empire, one death in particular stood out to me for its disturbing brutality, the scene where an ex-IRA man murders another in the bathroom of a quiet bar.

Any kind of torture scene really gets to me (even the baddie being tortured:rolleyes:) ..Cant remember the name of the movie but this guy was strapped to a table in a warehouse with a mirror overhead and had a very long drawn out death, even though he had wiped out someones family I still find those scenes hard to watch..

Cop in Reservoir Dogs is chilling but I'd go with the killing of Angel Fernández in Scarface.

This. That scene stayed with me long after the movie finished. Gruesome stuff.

Another would was the baseball bat killings in Casino.

The death at the end of "Song for a Raggy Boy" is a disturbing end to a disturbing film. Probably made worse by the fact that such things were covered up in real life.

Also, the death of Luca Brassi in "The Godfather" was brutally realistic- I had to look away.

    In Fury
where the American Tank patrol get attacked by young Germans hiding in the bushes and one of the American leaders in burning alive and pull out his gun and shoots himself.

It absolutely terrified me and I an't imagine how it must feel to be in a position where you have to
make a decision to burn to death or kill yourself
. It was a completely spine chilling moment.

It's not maybe a big moment in the film but it's the one that left the most lasting impression on me.

Yeah the baseball bat scene was rough alright, and if I'm caught for a rough scene in a movie I will never look at it again, I hate violence!
The scene in goodfellas where Joe pesci opens the booth of the car and stabs your man! Rough!

    No Country For Old Men:
Josh Brolin, happens off screen so maybe doesn't qualify, but what a gut punch that was

Optimus Prime in the animated Transformers has stayed with me all these years.

A bit conceptual, but the ending of The Incredible Shrinking Man. We don't see him die but we know he will as he is reduced to the size of an atom. Bleak man.

    On screen, dunno really.

Thought of one, its a Bond death - in Licence to Kill, where Sanchez throws a henchman into the pressurised chamber whacks it up to the max and then releases the pressure. Sadly these days the ITV prints edit this down. So no splat.

Chilling? The death of Frank Poole, at the hands of HAL 9000, in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The very definition of a calculated, heartless murder.

Now I think of it - Stanley Kubrick is responsible for another: Alex singing and dancing to Singing In The Rain, while murdering someone using a ceramic penis, in A Clockwork Orange.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

2 from the Omen - the dude getting decapitated by the sliding pane of glass, and the guy getting cut in half by the falling elevator cable (think that one was in Omen 2). Nothing particularly deep about either of them, just memorably gruesome.

Wolf Creek, especially the scene in the shed.

    I liked Wolf Creek.
Apparently the bad guy in that used to be a Children's TV presenter in Australia.
That's like me watching a movie and seeing Noel Edmunds or Keith Chegwin mutilating backpackers.

In the first resident evil film when the team get locked in the corridor and the laser cuts them all up, especially the last guy, that was ****ing grim, gave me nightmares. In one of the saw film your man basically gets his head blown to **** from 2 ice blocks approaching from either side.

One that's always stayed with me is the Sarah Connor fiery apocalyptic nuke death in Terminator 2. Okay, technically it's not quite a bona fide "death", being part of a dream - really a terrifying nightmare - sequence, but it's still real to me dammit!

Looking back I saw Judgement Day at far,far too early of an impressionable age. It really knocked my pre-pubescent brain all over the shop. I couldn't have been any more than five or six, when I first saw it, at a friends house. I was able to hang in there, mostly, as it was going on. I was a-okay with movie violence, especially that dished out by the man from Kindergarten Cop. But then came the judgement day sequence...

When I say I was hanging on in there, I mean I was able for the films action. My tiny brain could process it, but I wasn't exactly following the plot in any meaningful way - Something about robots and shooting people? So the playing out of a nuclear strike on screen - when it arrived in excruciating and realistically harrowing detail - hit me like a megaton bomb to the mind. Firstly, because I didn't expect it, and, secondly, because it had an intensity to it that I didn't even know the magnitude of, far beyond my understanding. I wasn't even aware that films could be frightening. I remember a growing sense of fear and bewilderment at what I was watching. A feeling of things not being nice and not being okay. It kicked my ass. Not sure if I pissed my pants. I wouldn't bet against it.

Watching the movie again recently, I was struck about how that sequence and particularly the death itself, still hold up against my memories of the first time. A lot of the time, when I revisit films from my childhood, I'm frequently amazed by how details of films like characters or individual scenes seem and feel far less epic and meaningful to me now, than how I remember experiencing them as a child. The Sarah Connor "death" still feels brutal - The screaming and writhing in pain, the skin sizzling like grease in a frying pan, followed by a burnt out husk of a corpse being vaporized in the blast-wave -Take that five year old me, and adult me is still terrified, at some level, to this day.

The Grey- the guy who had to climb across the make shift rope with a mangled hand. He waited until last to go to sum up the courage because he was so afraid and eventually it was too painful to hold on. He inevitably plummeted to his death ,as we knew he would , getting dragged off & eaten by the wolves he'd been trying to escape.

Not quite chilling, but Paul Newman's death in the rain in Road to Perdition. I found it moving when he says to Tom Hanks character "I'm glad it's you". The perfect line delivered perfectly by an incredible actor.

Even death in Frozen. Which absolutely should not be confused with the Disney movie of the same name. Dear God, that movie is essentially my nightmare.
