MTV's ''White People'' Documentary

I'm not sure how people have seen it but it is available to stream here

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zjj1PmJcRM on Youtube.

I have to say in the last couple of months I am disgusted with MTV's race baiting, which is all anti white. It is things like this that are stirring up tensions and keeping race issues alive. I believe racism is a big problem in the USA, but it should not be dealt with by trying to paint all white people as baddies who are born with ''white privilege'' that they should forever be guilty about and all other races as victims.

Although I had heard bad things about this documentary before watching it and to be honest the basic premise did not sit well with me. Imagine a documentary on Black people or Asian People done in the same way this documentary was done? (And it was done in such a way that basic facts were skewed or left out just to fit the agenda). On the other hand, I felt that it could possibly be a very good, honest documentary on race relations.

To be honest I was unable to finish it as it was making me angry. To give one example why:

A white student got very good grades and accepted into her dream university. She was unable to attend due to finances and being unable to obtain a scholarship but noticed there were many more scholarships available to non white students. And so her and mother very politely said it felt like discrimination that after working very hard, she was being denied opportunities due to her race when basically it should just be done to grades and hard work.

Then we are given figures and statistics to show why it is fair to exclude white people from scholarships.

We are told 96% of scholarships are available to white people These are available to EVERYONE regardless of skin colour, however we are just told they are available to white people in the documentary. They then ignore the fact that therefore 4% of all scholarships are basically racist, excluding people on the basis of their skin colour because according this documentary, excluding white people is ok

We are then told how 62% of students are white but they get 69% of scholarships available. This is used as a justification that white people are not at a disadvantage but are actually disproportionately getting more scholarships It completely ignores the fact that scholarships are given on merit. It never even mentions the fact that these scholarships are given on the basis of academics or athletic skill but makes it appear that white people are greedily and unfairly taking more scholarships from students of other races. It ignores the fact that they worked hard to get them, obviously harder than the students who were unsuccessful.

I dont know has anyone else seen this but I believe it is a very unhealthy dialogue about race in what could have been an excellent documentary. it is very biased, but an interesting watch. I may finish it later when I am less annoyed :)

Same! In the last 5 years it has crept into UK and Irish media so much! If everyone shut up about it no one would care.

Baiting using race as a topic.
In other words trying to start arguments using race as a topic.
All blacks are criminals. All Asians are bad drivers. All whites are racist. And so on.

Another form of it is using your race as a way to kinda overrule people. You see it in America (of course :pac:) with black folks doing the "you're only doing this because I'm black" thing when cops stop them or arrest them.

I don't know that it is to be honest. According to the media the UK is overrun with Muslims in hijabs screaming allahu ackbar on their way to the shops. In reality while there are plenty of different ethnicities all over London their all culturally similar to each other no matter what religion or race they are.

When I was in the states I saw absolutely no sign of racism and everyone seemed to get along, I talked to black people, who were friends with white people and never got the impression there was an undercurrent of contempt from anyone.

The media are a bunch of **** stirring, scare mongering, gossip merchants. They paint a highly embellished version of events that just doesn't match up to reality. probably find

europeans and the asians are without a doubt historically the superior races,I dont believe its a race issue today but a cultural one. The asians have an incredibly rich history of empire/civilization and invention,But today they shun that amazing history in favour of a nutty book,I believe the white bashing by the media is a trend,Liberalism has been hijacked by this line of self hating thought just like feminism has been hijacked by sexist nutjobs. Haven't watched it but from the extracts you've given you seem to be overlooking the fact that due to a plethora of issues a black person may be unable to achieve the same academic standard as a white person or may have inferior financial means or potential financial means.

Is it fair that X white person is 'punished' of the sins of they're great great grandfather? Perhaps not, fair that that the great great grandson/daughter of the victim has an advantage - perhaps not.

Frankly though one would assume it's a more nuanced issue than perhaps MTV can deal with. That said at least the dumbing down has found a home rather than it contaminating every possible form of media and channel on the TV.

MTV used to be extremely racist to the point where they couldn't even play a music video of a black person like Michael Jackson. Now it seems they've become just as racist but in the other direction.

"Oh look, a black and a white person arguing, clearly the white person is racist. Only people who have studied the issue would notice the racism."

    Just ignore them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,554 ✭✭✭valoren

Using the "you're only doing/that this because I'm *ethnicity*" phrase is double standard racism. The implication bring that the person must be inherently racist to do what they're doing or say what they're saying. It's a cop out.

I have to slightly disagree with you here. Using the scholarship example, the criteria would be that all people applying must be in the same financial position, same as here in Ireland, that if your household is below a certain income you do not receive a grant.

So to say that maybe a black person doesn't have the same finances therefore justifying the fact that there should be scholarships that are blatently racist excluding all white people is unfair.

On your point about black people not being able to achieve the same academics than whites therefore they should be allowed seperate scholarships...also unfair. Everyone is given the same opporutunity to education. Yes there are private schools etc. with higher education standards but students attending these would not seek financial aid.

And it is not right in my opinion to say that "well a certain race seems to have on average lower test scores so let's give them separate scholarships and exclude all others". Imagine the uproar if someone created a scholarship and said the criteria was that the person had to be living in hardship and also had to be Caucasian.

Imagine this situation: a white and black girl applied for all the same scholarships where the criteria was based solely on grades. They both had the same grades, the white girls were very slightly higher though. Both didn't get a scholarship. However the black girl then applied for this other scholarship that was unavailable to the white girl because it excluded Caucasians. The black girl was then awarded this scholarship based on her grades even though the white girls grades were slightly higher.

I think that is very unfair.

But I do agree that MTV are not really making a good effort at approaching his topic.

Edit: I may watch this documentary before taking my own opinions too seriously! But I am unsure they would change.

You're imputing a huge amount of Irish experience in to the above. In egalitarian terms the we're way ahead of the US a good comparison might be Ireland compared to Sweden. US scholarships are not grants, they're based on all sorts of criteria from athletic ability to social background. They are deliberately discriminatory and rightly so.

We have a similar set up here in some cases. Are you suggesting that someone with limited financial means, in a poor area in Dublin gets the same opportunities - educationally - then someone in Donnybrook? There are scholarships in Ireland designed to redress that balance. In the US the gap is even bigger.

I'd never heard of this, but had a read of this article in The Atlantic.

It's hard to say exactly what I think about this. The thing that comes to mind is: I know black people can suffer discrimination that white people don't. However, a lack of discrimination does not translate to "priviliege". It's not a zero-sum game, where one person's disadvantage is another's advantage: by not discriminating against me, you're not doing me any favours. I don't benefit from the mistreatment of others; the whole human race is diminished by blind racism.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

My girlfriend used to work for years in the Admissions department of a major west coast university.

University in the USA can cost a massive amount.

The system of grants and financial assistance and scholarships is very different than Ireland.

There's a huge amount of financial assistance available to minorities that might appear to be discriminatory to people outside those groups. Native Americas for instance, probably get the most, the reason being they have a disproportionately large dropout rate. What can you do?

Anyway, i havent watched the show. But will probably avoid.
