My a4 avante was written off yesterday.. Mrs was in the driver seat.. Going through m4 toll eastbound.... Got rear ended at speed while at the toll barrier...both of us are OK... Mrs was brought to connelly hospital to be checked for back and neck injuries..whiplash and torn shoulder muscle... They cut the roof off to get her out to avoid further injury.
Rang insurance today.. Waiting on assessor...

You never know when it's gonna happen.

Just be glad you are both generally OK. I travel that route a lot and just wonder how the hell someone could be that oblivious to the toll and the speed limit.

Were they driving a car more than 15 years old....?

    Seriously though, glad you're OK.

No they were in 151 octavia.. Glad to be OK... I have no marks at all... Mrs was in shock and obviously quite sore now.

By coincidence I was just watching an episode of motorway cops or similar on TV and that exact thing happened. A woman in a 5 series rear ended what I think was another a4 while they were stopped at a motorway.

I was wondering how anyone could be so oblivious. Guess more than one person was.

Glad the outcome wasn't too bad and look after your self. I was in a crash a while back and also injured my shoulder. I recommend tramadol. Really helps.

Good to hear you're both alive.

Fair play to modern auto engineering.

Glad everyone is ok but how does a 'rear end at speed' happen at toll ?
Driver fall asleep or something ?

Probably looking for change or something. I travel that road every week and the number of people who tailgate me before going through the EasyPass is ridiculous. If that barrier doesn't raise for some reason and I have to break, I know someone will hit the back of me.

Glad you were in a decent car with plenty of rear crumple zone and good solid seats which are probably well designed and could have whiplash reducing features in them. If you were in a full laden small hatchback, it might have been a different story.

What's the 15 year old thing mean?

Most people in this country haven't a clue about stopping distance. The 2 second rule @ 120kph equates to 70 meters between cars, lucky to get 7 usually. On my way from Limerick to Dublin today I saw two rear-end accidents, and was very nearly hit myself when stopped in traffic at the Newlands cross flyover. The standard of driving on motorways in this country is nothing short of appalling, but what can you expect when the only thing the RSA have done for road safety in the past few years is hire a company to make a few adverts, and make newly qualified drivers put up a magic safety sticker.

Even the most innocuous city car turns into a rabid baby eating killing machine once it turns 15, according to no statistics anywhere but the secret ones held by irish insurance companies.

I'd say that was a tourist in a rental car.

Some insurance companies in Ireland have decided to publicly admit they will load premiums on cars over 15 years old. More likely to be in a crash apparently.

This country is going to go very expensive in a few years once more people are at work and businesses get a sniff that households have more disposable income.

Glad you and the Mrs are relatively ok, OP.

Oh yeah, didn't cop it was related to that. Although I don't agree with it, or think that i't morally correct to load people who can't afford a newer car(or dont want one), I do see where they're coming from.

Between 1990 and 2000, huge leaps were made in terms of car safety, maybe that has slowed somewhat, but on cars less than 10 years old, ABS(Mandatory since '07) and stability control are pretty much standard, 6 airbags is the minimum, and even the likes of reversing sensors reduce likelihood small car park bumps.

To be frank the insurance don't really care , the reason its loaded on older cars is simply to do with their near zero financial worth versus the damage they can do to another car / humans.

Nothing to do with quality of an older car its a pure financial equation.

OP glad you and the war dept. are safe and well, any accident you can walk away from with just a few small injuries is a good result.

    .

If you are worried about someone not paying attention behind you and the barrier doesnt raise, just drive through it, its foam covered and meant to spring away. It wont damage your car, Dont ask how I know this :P

Use tags and the express lanes on the motorways to avoid this

Glad to hear you are both ok

    There you are.
Living in a happy go lucky world of your own.

You can't possibly avoid someone rear ending you.
Even the express lanes have a barrier that for any given reason might not go up- and you get rear ended

I find that people with tags slow down especially in the express lanes

Your point seems irrelevant to my post :)
