Is the any hassles from changing from a 11-28 to a 12-30?

Should be fine, even if you have a short cage rear mech. Most of the newer ones can take 30 cog on the back with no problem.

If you have very short chain you may need to install a longer one (a link or two) - but again, 2 teeth difference should not be an issue.

The cage on my Ridley will take a 28 but not a 30. It's a short cage I think.

Really? Have you tried adjusting the B screw?

I have SS Sora (new) RD and it was even shipped with 11-30. What is yours?

I've used 12-30 Ultegra cassette with Ultegra short cage RD on a Roubaix and it's fine. I just have to screw in the B-tension slightly so that the jockey wheels don't hit the 30t sprocket when it's on 34x30.

It's an Ultegra. Now that you say it, I'm pretty sure it took a 30 when the previous 105 was on it.

I googled many people that run Ultegra short mechs with 12-30 (as above). Perhaps its down to frame/hanger geometry?

It was my LBS who told me it wouldn't fit and demonstrated it. I can't recall why they were showing me as I do all my own cassette/chain work.

I'm curious, I'll take a closer look at your bike tomorrow if you don't mind :)

I'd say stay safe and get a longer mech. They're not that costly especially if you *really* need that extra 2 teeth :P

I'll have the Fuji tomorrow - not the Ridley! :)

A 30/11 would be a better option IMO - a extra higher gear for long descents.

I never use more than 50/12 on descends (as I don't have more! ;) ), and spin out at 60-64kph... Do we have descends long enough to keep higher speeds for longer?

It doesn't have to be a long descent. I spin out on an 11 on the descent into Naul. Averaged 60km/h one day but I think I was up to 78km/h at one point. Still managed joint 2nd on Strava with a compact. Now if only I had a standard chainset for it!

Just checked my yesterday ride, I spin out at 125rpm and 60kph. My tyres are bigger too, so 11 on the back would be more suitable for 23mm rubber.

    I stand corrected. :)

It's just come to me now. 2 days before I went to the Alps last year, the hanger for the RD broke on the Fuji. Dropped it into the LBS. The rang me and said it would have to be ordered and would take a while. I had no option but to take the second in command - the Ridley but decided to take the wheels off the Fuji which were lighter and had a 30/11 cassette.

Brought the Ridley frame into the LBS to put on the wheels from the Fuji but the cage wouldn't take it. Ended up taking heavier wheels with 28/11 cassette but got on fine. Probably partly psychological but if you know you have a 30, you'll use it even though I got on fine with the 28.

I have 27 on the back. Once I decided not to shift to it at all while going up Cruagh road, and found the perceived effort more or less the same - I was just turning pedals slower at 34x25, I thought. Yet beaten my personal record by 30s or so!

Very psychological thing - somehow it is very hard not to use a gear if you know it is there :) Never managed to repeat this experiment.

Ok, time for sleep. See you there WA :)

I have a 10s 30-12 running on a shimano Ultegra RD 6770 SS Short Cage which is the same size as the mech version as far as I am aware.

On reflection as I write this, there is a lot of "B Screw" left and I wonder if it would take a 32 BUT that could be down to my rear hanger and what the B screw pushes of/the angle of it etc.

I have an 11-32 on another bike but I changed to a GS medium RD for that.

I never had these expensive issues when I was 11 years old on a Raleigh Burner :(
