When does insurance get cheaper?

    Hey

Passed my test last week, and now waiting for my licence! I'm planning on getting insured on my own car (1.2L Hyundai i10).

Is it likely that I'll get a cheaper quote for insurance either after I turn 18 (end of August) or once I've been on the road for a full year (have had my permit since last October)? If so I'd much rather wait until then, save myself some money :)

    Thanks guys!

Once you have years of no claims bonus is when it'll get cheaper. Having your licence a year makes very little difference. Difference between 17 and 18 is probably miniscule too.

I have over 5 years no claims,no points but insurance companies are using the excuse that my car is getting old. (1999 Civic)

I've been driving since i was 24 (Late starter)

After 25 it went down a fair bit.

Now im 32 8 years no claims never had any points and still spending 700e+

    It's abit random tbh

Do you shop around for insurance quotes?

Just got my renewal quote for small car, and it was €565 last year and now they want €718 and I have 7 years no claims bonus. I can't see motor insurance getting cheaper for anyone for years to come. Shop around for hours till you find the cheapest quote, there are many many insurance companies out there and very time consuming but just spend good time looking and see.

Yup its just gone up across the board

That is with every extra under the sun though on a fairly fast hatchback

I normally play one insurance company off the other. Works to a certain extent.

I've been driving for 7 or 8 years and it was really after 25 that I noticed the biggest drop. Still paying too much though.

Is it something to do with the car you're driving ? Phone as many companies as you can on next renewal. Liberty especially are known to offer good quotes to 1st time customers who have a clean record.

They obviously have no taste ;) tbh they gave me a high quote and when you add on all the extras it was too much. AA were the cheapest for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭lycan238

My car insurance went up nearly €200 (last years premium to this years renewal) so I went to a different company. My insurance went down a fair bit two years ago from 900-1000 down to 600-650 I was told it was due to my car getting older, companies making a loss and to a certain extent the quinn levy. last year I did phone around the different companies and brokers and my renewal was cheaper than all the rest so ringing around does not always work.

    I paid 1900 at 22 for my first insurance (06 Civic 1.4).

Dropped to 900 the next year. Pretty decent going so far.

Just renewed today @ 575, tpft on the celica, 25 with 8 years no claims. Seen a good discount year on year from age 17 to 21, bottomed out at 21 and got dearer year on year until this year despite the car staying the same. Then a good drop this year again 750 to 575, but even at that a lot of companies wanted €1k+

    So about 5.25k so?

The 'car too old' excuse is a sales technique I think. I've heard of that being used on a '03 ML270 CDI. I think it depends on the company whether or not you'll get that, the person you get on the phone, the day of the week and whether or not it's a full moon. You could get a quote for a single policy on a classic car one week and they'd be cribbing about a 10 year old one the next.

At this stage Ive come to accept that the actuaries who make the quotes pluck the figure out of their arses. I just shop around and the ones that give me the cheapest quote is the one I go for.

Insurance is a swindle of the highest order, and I say that because I worked in it. However that is one of the things that is typically true - replacing a part on a 16 year old car is harder and often more expensive than a new car, because the parts may not be very easy to find anymore.

Prices for men and women have been the same for two and a half years. The thing is, rather than raising women's insurance and lowering mens by (about) the same amount, they basically just increased women's up to the price that mens was previously (or very close to it). Because insurance is essentially legalised robbery (down to some of the best paid staff in that industry being the people who find out how they can NOT pay you out when you go to make a claim).

Interestingly though, before that ruling came into effect, women from their mid 40s to their mid 50s were paying more than men for insurance. Only just marginally mind, but it's just a bit of trivia that has stuck with me.

Also for anyone that lives with their partner, over 25 with a full clean licence (no claims/pp's/convictions), make sure to get placed on each others policies, because for f*** knows why that is the one person who reduces the cost of your insurance.

When I asked about this I was told that anyone settled down enough to have a partner they want on their insurance was less likely to be acting the maggot.

Yeah but that's pure b*llocks the person was telling you because they didn't know either. I used to joke about it being "typical old Catholic Ireland, eh?" or "they figure you'll take more care in your wife's car because she would murder you if you damaged it" and so on... but it wasn't true.

Insurance loves to be based on actuarial evidence and statistical data. Except when it would prefer not to be. Because... well, because.

Increased price for comprehensive cover for older vehicles, despite a lower value would make sense in that case.

Flat out refusal to insure cars on annual nct, even the minimum mandatory third party cover, is a joke. They wouldnt be long making a song and dance about a newer car having no nct if it gave them an excuse to not payout. They can't have it both ways, either the nct is a reasonable indicator of road worthiness or it isn't.

If they say these older cars are often used in cash for crash, its no excuse - it's hardly 1 in 10, or even 1 in 1000 older cars that are used for fraud.

So yeah, swindle, having their cake and eating it swindle.

I'll give you a heads-up. If any of you decide to do an online quote with Chill Insurance broker, just make sure your phone is turned off. As soon as you enter your home or mobile phone number online with Chill Insurance they will have it and will ring you immediately trying hard to get you.

There I was relaxed at the computer saying to myself that I will do a good few online quotes for car insurance, and I tried Chill, but as soon as I entered my phone number they were on the phone calling me lol. Best bet is to spend a few hours to go through as many brokers or direct insurance companies as you can, but just turn the phone off.

Hondas are brilliant, parts relatively cheap, easy tofind and would survive a nuclear war. I don't buy it.

Ch*ll are a shower of cnuts.Same thing happened to me a few yrs ago. They rang me almost immediately and insured me with that effn crowd from America who would not recognise my no claims. Ch*ll stood idly by and did nothing to assist me.I would never take insurance with L*berty again ,even if it was for free!...and as for having Ch*ll as a broker I'd rather get my cat to act for me.

Well here is the beauty of insurance in a nutshell: The 'rule' increases the price, so the exceptions do not count. But if the 'rule' decreases the price, then you better believe every little, last exception will be used to the highest extent possible to bring that price back up (see: gender equality ruling).
