Changing Car Mid Policy

    Hi Guys

    Need some advice/clarification.

I'm going to be purchasing a new car over the next two weeks and will ring my insurance company the day of purchasing the new car to make the switch over.

I've done this over the last few years and encountered no difficulties except the switch-over fee (based on the valuation of the car)

    I'll be switching from a 2011 2.0TDI (177bhp) to a new 2.0TFSI (300bhp) 4 wheel drive on this occasion and I'm 24 years of age.

Now previously I've spent €100 - €150 quid whilst switching the car on my car previously and I understand this is based on valuation of the vehicle which is ok.

My question relates to the switch in engine power although its the same engine size. If the insurer gives me any issues with actually insuring me what should I do?

I'm with the company quite a long time along with the rest of my family.

I don't want to purchase the car and then encounter issues with the insurer. I dont mind spending the transfer car fee but is there anything to look out for or say to the insurer in-case I have difficulties getting insured?

    Many thanks in advance

No offence but I'd be suprised if they insure you. I'd imagine that car us in the over 25s catagory; did yu check with them before buying it?

Insurance companies are required to insure you on another car if you change it mid-policy.

It might be expensive but it will happen.

Very simple - ring the insurance company now and get a quote for what the new car will be.
I switched from a 08 1.6l to a 151 2.0l and the premium was the same at the time of the change. It went up about €50 at renewal, which was fair enough as the car was 3 times the value.

Also with 123.ie its a €40 admin fee, not a percentage of the price.

    Cheers for the response lads.

I believe you are correct in saying insurance companies are required to insure you on another car if you change it mid-policy.

I paid 160 quid last time around to switch cars and that was based on valuation so I'm expecting something similar this time around it's just the extra power from the engine what had me thinking there might be an issue.

    Thanks again!

I'm making the same move from 177 diesel to 300 petrol. Is it a golf you are buying? If so it wasn't any different as the new car has a number of safety features that help keep it lower risk to insurance companies. Small bumps in traffic are avoided for example. I would imagine these are common and costly for insurance companies. Best advice, as mentioned, is to ring now and ask if you were to buy the car tomorrow. Then once you have price say you'll get back to them when you complete the deal.

Seems we are in the same boat :)

The Golf was indeed the first option but the S3 is swaying me. It will be one or the other.

I agree completely I'll ring them tomorrow morning and get the quotation

From my experience insurance companies don't really ask you to bend over when you change your car.

Renewal might be a different story though.

I haven't even seen either in the flesh. Be aware if you opt for golf and are buying 152 you get one that was built on or after week 22. Small refresh done, nothing really cosmetic but the head unit has been upgraded to a superior unit. So either get one with the newer unit, I don't believe any online right now have this. If it doesn't, knowing this might help with discount. I don't know much about the detail on s3 other than its same platform but audi over vw meaning bit more pricey. So really comes down to personal preference.

Yes, I'm with 123.ie aswell, I'm changing over from a 131 2.0 TDI (140PS) to a new 2.0 turbocharged petrol (+300PS) soon enough. No increase in premium, just the€40 admin fee......that said I am 11 years older than you (Praetorian22) so my age probably is a factor.

Are both cars already in stock or are you looking at a factory order? Bear in mind a factory order on either will take at least 12 weeks. I ordered an R 16 weeks ago and it's only gone into production this week! My patience is worn down.

As others have posted above, you might be surprised at the quote. The MK7 Golf / New A3 have a low insurance group. You'd probably insure a new R cheaper than a MK5 R32 for example. It's all down to the new safety tech / security that's in the newer cars, particularly the radar cruise control.

Currently 1 Golf R and 2 S3 saloons in the country (to my knowledge) online, beautiful cars they all are but very rare at present.

A lapiz blue R landed into stock in Western Motors in Galway yesterday. I had a good poke in and around it. Might be worth your while checking it out. What spec are you after? That one had a few options ticked.

There's several others up on Carzone but many of them don't exist! Just the dealers fishing for enquiries...

    You didn't test drive Joe?

Anyway my local VW dealer Blackwater Motors got a brace in 2 months ago, so they said...

They have two now by the looks and I'm hoping for a long run :)
