Bottom bracket damaged after pedal clipped ground

Going around a tight left hander a few days ago, my brother clipped his left pedal off the ground. The crank loosened after the impact. The LBS says the aluminium sleeve that the bottom bracket sits in has cracked, is now rotating inside the frame, and the bike is therefore a write off. It's a Giant TCR comp with a sealed BB.
Does anyone know if this makes sense, or sounds about right? Bottom brackets are like dark magic to me.

How did he manage that and stay on?!?

I think you've turned me off pressed BB's now.
Sounds mad if that's the cause.

    I'd ask specialized.

If the pedal took a lateral shunt then I guess it could have damaged the BB shell.

On a side note, it's sort of his own fault, taking a tight left corner with his left pedal down is asking for trouble!

There's no way that pedal strike should be able to write-off a frame.

...unless the frame was weaker in this spot before. It may have added to some manufacturing issue.

It might be worth bringing the bike to one of the Giant shops here ; the might be able to better advise whether a repair possible. I'd expect, at worst, your brotehr will need a new frame rather than an entire new bike.

He says the back wheel hopped about 2 and half feet into the air! I've no idea how he stayed on. Lunatic.

Good call, OTF. The LBS thinks there is some crowd in Wicklow who can rebond the shell. It looks like it's only the LHS sleeve is loose. But apparently it's touch and go if this will work.

The sleeve loosening seemed to be more common a few years ago when carbon started to come in. Its not an easy fix and there is no guarantee that a repair will hold (its not cheap to do either). I have seen a few that have been done, not all worked.

Before you do anything I would contact Giant and see if they would do anything for you.

there are square taper brackets available that screw together from each side- generally used when threads are stripped
or an adapter such as "c bear" which would bring the bracket back to BSB..

maybe it wont be his best bike anymore but im sure itll be useable with some adaption..

Full weight of rider and bike bouncing off the pedal could do it.

Giant unwilling to help, as bike is a few years old, and bought second hand.
