    Hi guys-

I've had a few car issues and have had to have some repairs done.
The mechanic is lazy about getting back to me with a bill- but I've a lot of expensive things I have to pay for over the next 6-8 weeks, and *need* to have some sort of an idea how much (ballpark) I might owe the guy.

All the work is above board- VAT etc will be due on it.

    Details:

Brake tubes * 4 (no obvious issue- however, I was warned the NCT guys are checking them- they were an advisory item last time round)
Brake calipers * 1 (seriously leaking the dot 4 fluid)
    Alternator (existing had failed)
Timing belt (original belt was worn and needed replacing- but hadn't gone)
Water pump (no obvious issue- but the mechanic advised he always swaps out the water pump when hes doing the timing belt)
Minor electrical work (necessitated redoing the H7 sockets for the headlights- the pre-existing sockets were set in some sort of ceramic that was disintegrating causing them to earth)
Labour (about 10 hours in total)

Would anyone be willing to hazard ballpark figures for the above? New Volvo parts were used exclusively (with the exception of the brake tubes, caliper, H7 sockets etc- all of which were good quality generics)

    Thanks guys!

hat model, engine and year is it? It'l help give you a more detailed response.

That said, to give a very very rough idea:

    rubber brake hoses x4 €60
    1x caliper €125
    recondition alternator €100
timing belt kit and water pump €150
    h7 bulb holders x2 €20

    10 hours labour at say €60 p/h

    You're looking around €1k

A round thousand give or take- damn!

    Its a 2004 Volvo V40 Lux Sports Wagon - 1.9TDi, 245bhp etc

Thanks for your quick guesstimate on what the bill might come to- I appreciate it (though where I'm going to get a grand from- I do not know......)

    Thanks!

I would take that price very roughly the alternator could easily be double

    Could well be more.

For example if the timing belt kit and water pump were genuine Volvo parts then you can probably double the €150 guesstimate.

also very usual for anyone to undertake that amount of work without a reasonably succinct estimate
