Buying a second family car

    Hi all,

I would like to ask you for a bit of advise. I am in the market for buying a second car into our family and I have a list of models that I am considering now.

    Volvo S40
    VW Passat
    Mazda 6
    Honda Accord
    Ford Mondeo

It would definitely be 08 or newer and my budget would be 8-9k paying cash. I would definitely like to go for Diesel models and prefer smaller engines because of the tax and the consumption, and I would like the mileage of below 100k miles.

Anybody can advise on the pro's and con's of each model and help with selecting the ''correct'' one?
Also I was thinking about importing from north of UK, is it worth it?

    Thanks,

What sort of milage are doing?, that will make it clear as to whether a petrol or diesel would be a better option.

I do about 15k miles per year.

I think you will struggle to find a small engined or cheap to tax diesel car from one of those you listed on your budget. Even 2008 models which will have cheaper tax are heading towards 8 years old now which means it would be normal for them to have 100k miles plus on them at this stage. Remember on the newer tax system it is based on the car's emissions, not the size of the engine.

You will either have to consider a petrol model (which is limited in that segment of car) or have to consider either paying more in motor tax or increase in your budget.

At 15000 miles you could go either way. This is something you may not have considered. Tax is 570.

I have looked at some cars already and it is possible to find what I am looking for at that price, usually engine wise it is 1.6-2.0 diesel and the max. motortax on them is approx 400 euro, which I find acceptable, I do not expect to buy 2 litre car and only pay like 200 on tax for it.

Generally cheap to tax cars cost more to buy because everyone wants them. Motor tax is only one aspect of car ownership and it tends to be a small percentage of total ownership yet people focus so much on it.

    Hi,

thanks, but no, I would not be interested in Saab, I tried the 9-3 model and I did not really like it. Also I would be a bit worried about the lack of dealers, particularly here in the west of Ireland.

    Have you considered Skoda?

I have, but I found out for similar money I can get Passat, which I like more than Skoda.

If there is Opel garage around you are sorted for the Saab's.....

I think often people think that because there aren't that many deals parts and servicing would be hard to find and expensive, the thing is I had a laguna and the parts for that were 2x more expensive than for the saab!
I find that saab is much cheaper to service also!
