Broadband choices (Galway)

    Hi,
My friends and I are moving into our own house for college next year and I am wondering what would be the best choice for broadband. We wouldn't be able to keep up a long contract and of course wouldn't want to spend a fortune as we are in college budgets maybe in the range of €40 a month would be fine.
    Thanks in advance.

One way to do it would be getting a deal like the upc 240mb anytime world and horizon max TV, €25 for first 12 months, 18 month contract.
Once the 9 months or whatever you're in college for is up, cancel it and pay €200 to leave early.
You'll pay €225+€200 = €425, and have digital HD TV and fast broadband.

Most suppliers let you move. Set it up in one person's name and move it back to the parents after the 9 months. Just make sure they're going to be out of contract in 9 months time.

For broadband if UPC is available there simply isn't another option, they are by far the best.

A lot of people that rent college houses aren't from the cities and mightnt be able to move it home with them.

    Then again they might.

I know Sky will let you out of the contract if the service can't be moved. I personally wouldn't got with them for broadband but it might make financial sense. If you can get fibre it'd be €30 a month, for six months then 3 months at €50 then "I live in Ballygobackwards Co. Longford can you move it? No - Shame, see you again next year." UPC for what I can remember don't allow contract termination on the basis you're moving out of a service area.

EDIT: Of course you can terminate early - I'm surprised they do that for €200 but not having checked that I'm not disputing it.

They do, it's very popular, especially with students and the amount of "6 months" deals they do.

UPC don't let you out of contract if the service can't be moved.

If you get 4 lads in the house, set up account, get first bill, each pay €110 in payzone, be in credit for the 9 months, remainder will cover cancellation fee. Simples.

    Hi Colm,
Thanks for your help so far, you also mentioned a payzone account. I think this would be a good idea as we wouldn't like the bill responsibility to fall on just one of us. What we were wondering is would there be many hidden charges or anything that might complicate payment?

Payzone is just outlets where you can pay your bill in cash. Handy if you have a few lads in the same house. One person is gonna have to put the bill in their name, so paying up front saves them from getting caught for someone not paying their share.
I can't think of any possible downfalls. Once ye do your sums in advance and pay it and actually remember to cancel when ye're leaving.
