    Hi All,

Firstly apologies if this has been asked previously but I have been talking with other commuter cyclists and we wondered who has the right of way in the following scenarios:

You are behind a car, the car is turning left. You are going straight ahead. Who has the right of way?
You are in front of a car, the car behind you is turning left. You are going straight ahead. Who has the right of way?

I don't mean to cause any Argo among cyclists/motorists just looking for a straight answer?

    Cheers in advance.

If you're ahead of the car they should be waiting for you to clear the junction rather than trying to go around you.

And vice versa, don't cut up the inside of a car that's turning left.

Quite simple really do not undertake or overtake anything that is turning in front of you.

This way you will arrive home safe and not under ones wheels.

Always be aware of your surroundings and whether one is right or wrong that is not a fight a cyclist should be taking on with any vehicle as the damage can be fatal.

To give an exact reply from the law books, nobody has right of way, but you may overtake on the left except in certain conditions...
    (b) A pedal cyclist may overtake on the left where vehicles to the pedal cyclist’s right are stationary or are moving more slowly than the overtaking pedal cycle, except where the vehicle to be overtaken—

    (i) has signalled an intention to turn to the left and there is a reasonable expectation that the vehicle in which the driver has signalled an intention to turn to the left will execute a movement to the left before the cycle overtakes the vehicle,

(ii) is stationary for the purposes of permitting a passenger or passengers to alight or board the vehicle, or

(iii) is stationary for the purposes of loading or unloading.”,

99% of the time the car, but if they have just overtake you and then immediately try to turn let they should be yielding IMO, its unsafe overtaking and they have not left enough room to clearly signal and make the turn without interfering with your progress.

That situation really only ever happens once or twice per journey, and turn signals seem to be optional now.
