My bike developed these quite loud cracking noises. They happen whenever I turn the handlebars whether I ride or just pick up the bike and turn the bars to left/right. Initially I thought maybe it was headset being too tight. But turns out the noise is cause by the rear brake cable that goes through the top tube. Is the cable too short or did it just twist in some strange way to make that noise?

Sounds like it might be a headset bearing. You may be able to alleviate it by regreasing. In my own case that kept it going for a few months but eventually the headset needed to be replaced - €50 at the LBS as I wasn't sure of the parts.

I thought so at the beginning but when I put my ear to the top tube I can hear the cable snapping the frame. If I put my ear to the headset area the sound is not in that spot. It's just very strange but loud as hell...

thats not so bad, it could have been worse, could have been your knees/hips/back.

Release the cables from the rear brake first and see does it still make the noise, if it does, release the RD cable and try again. If the noise disappears then yiu have your definitive answer.
