All okay, came into contact with a pub near abbyshrule airfield. Apparently lots of damage to the building so sounds like the people on board were lucky.
Anyone got anymore info on this?

Edit. Still off a video I found

    Propeller tipped the wall.

Lucks like a narrow little spot, lucky didn't land on on building or in the water.

Like the one in Scotland last year were people were killed...

Be interesting to see what brought this helicopter to crash here. Lots of fields safe places around to land. Breaking news say it was landing at the time so maybe a loss of power at low altitude? Time will tell anyway.

No gliding in a chopper, only falling.

But if he was high enough he can use auto rotation, granted it leaves you with only nearby options. Perhaps the canal was looking nice and soft.

The equivalent of gliding in a helicopter is called autorotation.

Yea, just looking at a few vids of it there, they get further than I thought they would.

He tried to land beside the pub and clipped the wall. Wasnt a crash

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 944 ✭✭✭s15r330

The idiot attempted to land there 2 or 3 times and clipped the pub on his final attempt. You nearly wouldn't park a car where it happened. Abbeyshrule airfield is a few hundred metres away and lots of open fields. Lucky he didn't kill someone.

Surely no way he actually wanted to land there??

Its the last place that looks safe to land a helicopter

Yep he did, made a few attempts to put it down before crashing!

I saw a video taken a few minutes before the crash. The guy flying the helicopter shouldn't be flying is all I can say.

Your not serious??...I was looking at satellite images on google maps and makes me question where he was trying to land.

Its my first thought too, looks like the rotor hit the side of the pub full belt, seems like a strange place to aim for if you were in difficulty.

Someones been playing a bit too much GTA.

Real-life helicopter access has been withdrawn :pac::pac::pac:

Very lucky not to have killed someone. Of all the pubs to land at, why would you pick one thats barely a kilometer from a perfectly good aerodrome.

    What a goose.....

That's the one linked up the page there. Looks like there's no footage of the actual crash but I can imagine they were doing something similarly stupid.

There is also cast iron lamp posts about every 30-40 ft along the canal bank and picnic tables, the canal bank also doesn't look wide enough to accommodate the width of the rotors. Seriously irresponsible flying on his behalf and what a waste of a lovely helicopter.

Pictures available online now of the site he tried landing on, sorry I can't link to them, I seriously hope no one was standing on the smoking deck.

It seems that this guy should be charged with reckless endangerment and lose his license straight off, but of course we're not allowed comment on anything about these crashes on this forum before the official report is released. Or so I thought.

I have one word, though; Bettystown.

Highly irresponsible flying, more so with the few attempts at landing. Lucky he did not kill anyone as a landing chopper usually attracts a crowd.

    Vid is crash here,

What In gods name was he thinking??? For a start, it's a picnic area not exactly the first port of call for a landing site. It appears to be beyond reckless, boats buildings street furniture and people all in the one space. I can't comprehend the disregard for safety that appears to be illustrated by the footage.

    holy fcuk:eek:

I cant understand what went trough his head to even attempt to land in between the poles and so close to a building.
That man walking around the heli is seriously lucky that he didnt get killed by a projected object...

So few Gazelles on the civil register because most of their service history is military; lots of certification issues tracking parts used and processes followed etc

And then someone creams one of them into a pub for no obvious reason :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 199 ✭✭megabantz

That is unbelievable.. If you watch the clip in the independant.ie cover of the story you can see the guy walking upto the picnic tables and move them back as if to create space for the pilot. It looks very likely the idiot was attempting (multiple times and badly at that) to land the chopper.... :/

Straight into prison and throw away the key. That idiot is so stupid that he's a danger to society, whether flying a heli or otherwise. I just cannot believe what I saw.

that video :eek::eek::eek::eek: really is amzing just how idiotic he was, he broke every rule possible in Aviation.

    a spell in Jail surely????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭EB_2013

He was probably trying to show off to his mates, 'Hey look where I can land'.

I hope they throw the book at him for that, surely you can't just decide to land a helicopter wherever you want.

Will be keeping an eye here to see what the "pilot" has to say about this one.

Can we speculate on the cause. My guess is that some young buck with a few hours on a robinson thought it would be a laugh to take daddys Gazelle out for a spin, because I can't imagine any experienced pilot being so absolutely fcuking stupid.

There is pic of a garda standing in the area beside the wreck of a once beatiful helicopter and it really draws to your attention how small the area is he was trying to land in.

Even looking at the wreck one can guage how small the area is.

I would love to be the farmer selling this guy land because the guy has no bloody concept of size.

All I can say is, sadly the people who can afford to fly such beautiful machines are often ones the least deserving of the chance and least capable.

I am not allowed discuss …

Not really, infact it was an experienced older pilot that was flying the chopper, and it's just so hard to think why would one put themselves in that position.

In fairness a precedent was set.
