Flexi time question

    I have a question about flexi time - say normal working hours are 9am to 5pm with one hour for lunch and the flexi time hours are 8am to 6pm with a minimum 30 mins for lunch, and core hours being 10am - 12pm and 2pm - 4pm.

    So I know that I could start at 8am and finish at 4pm (instead of 9-5) but does taking a shorter lunch break count towards finishing earlier? For example, could I start at 8.30am, take 30mins for lunch and still finish at 4pm?

    Sorry if this is a really stupid question, I've just never had a job with flexi time before and I want to make sure I understand it correctly!

    Yes but you wouldn't build up any Flexi time for time off.

    Ah ok, how does that work? Like, if I worked 8 to 4 for example but still only took 30mins for lunch would I then have 30mins to go towards a day off in the future is it?

    You will have to find out the number of hours you must work per month.

    Every day you are at work you MUST work the core hours and take the minimum lunch break. The lunchbreak does not count towards your flexi hours, but the 30 minutes you save by not taking the full hour does.

    If you divide the number of hours required per month by the number of days at work you will see the mimimum number of hours you must work each day to fulfil the monthly working quota.

    Anything above that can be saved towards time off.

    Did you not get any leaflet with your contract explaining how your flexitime works?

    I worked for a company with the same flexi as you describe. We could save hours up but they had to be used in a certain amount of time (eg within the month). This was to stop people working two extra hours every day to save towards a fortnights holiday in 6 months time.

I knew flexi time could be used to choose your own working hours (within certain limits) but I didn't know it could also be used to work up time off too.

    The terms and conditions of flexi time will vary depending on your company HR policy, or whether you are in the public sector.

    Most will allow you to work extra hours and save them for time off. But as the previous poster has said, there are restrictions, such as a maximum number of hours allowed to be saved per month, and the saved hours must be taken within one month etc.
