what do we want?

premise: You cannot arrive at a destination without having previously assigned a destination.

there I was sitting on the garden wall at still-bright 11pm, two inches under the rising moon, after too much walkies, and I thought, "What's it all about, Miltiades?"

you see, if we only knew what life were all about, we might be able to deduce whether our choices were sensible or not.

what exactly are we humans setting out to achieve?

the betterment of the species? In which case, efficient markets, eugenics, and totalitarianism seem most appropriate.

or, do we simply want utopia; here, now? i.e. maximum social welfare? should we all make one another maximally happy?

well, there is no right or wrong answer. but we must have an answer, any answer, if we want to proceed sensibly. does anyone have an answer?

answers on my desk tomorrow morning as I awake and regret this thread and ominous hours are ticking on all my clocks. thankyou.
