As nobody else has started a thread, and because I enjoy these threads so much, I have decided to kick one off.But I don't know how to do it, so I am attaching a link to "The Inner Rings" preview.

Can we clarify the "No spoilers" bit of the thread title please?
Does it mean that there can't be open discussion of the stage 'live' as in all other live stage threads, or am I missing something?

It was Eamonnator's first attempt!! Thread title changed - spoiler info on today's stage without spoiler tags is what he meant

lenny has promised to learn from any mistakes made today - if he gets it right he then has a pass for the next day (which is why I'm assuming he's going to be doing them for the remainder of the Tour!)

Stage 3 tomorrow isnt it? That's the individual team time trial over the cobbles in the alps ending on the tourmalet stage. My favorite.

Wiggins will catch him when they enter the velodrome.

Beasty, are you still sure you want me to do a preview?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭joehayes999

Given Froome's advantage others will need to try to win some of that back fairly soon, however with only on real climb today at the very end its a bit of a free for all and they will all be marking Froome. That makes it more likely for him to be the one to push things on this stage and try to push some of the contenders fully out of the reckoning.
Overall I fancy Uran to go close.

I don't think the stage is tough enough for the GC contenders to put Froome and Team Sky into much difficulty today. It'll be a shootout on the climb at the finish, and Froome looks the strongest at the moment.

I'm very interested to see how Van Garderen gets on today.

I am very interested to see Quintana & Contador. Only real contenders to take on Froome imo

But I actually think Purito could do very well on this stage today. He seems to have the form and its a hard climb but not too long

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 98 ✭✭GuitarMusic

The first very interesting stage. I'll be watching the final hour or so with interest.

I'm also keen to see how TJ gets on as well as the other climbers.

For some reason I can't warm to Froome. Don't know why though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

If Froome attacks, which I suspect he will (apparently he really fancies this stage) then we'll know by this afternoon what the next two weeks will hold. If he goes for it and can't dislodge Contador and Nario then it's game on! but if he does and they can't respond here then it's game over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,460 ✭✭✭lennymc

not neccisarily - every rider can have a bad day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

True. But this climb shouldn't really be hard enough to induce a bad day. If Froome accelerates away here then I despair for the tour. Then we'll be relying on Contador finding his alleged third week form, Nibali going bananas on the descents etc.....(that would be awesome though)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,460 ✭✭✭lennymc

i didnt mean that froome would have a bad day today - but he probably will have a bad day at some stage. I guess most of the top guys will finish reasonably close to each other today.

Hope TJ can put in a good performance today. I can't see beyond Froome or Quintana for the stage win.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if there's big gaps today..... but you never know. Anything other than sky train until 3km out would be great :)

After watching the first week and a bit I've come to the conclusion that this Tour is down to three men. Froome is a very strong favourite and has looked scarily strong so far, Quintana looks very good too but the dark horse is Van Garderen who has kept his cards close to his chest but for me is the only one that looks like he is strong enough to take on the two mentioned above. Contador is one of those that you can never rule out even when he is not looking so good but with Froome looking so strong I just don't fancy he can do it in this one.

Today's finish is going to answer a lot of questions about these guys and I think Van Garderen has to at least stay with Froome if he wants to be in with a shout.

As for today's winner, could Dan Martin do it?

Where is the poll for stage winner today? Any chance of adding it?

TDF starts proper today... The Pyrenees! Would like to see it been put up to Froome today. Hoping for lots of attacks and counter attacks.
Does anyone know who has the best Mountain domestiques to rival Sky?

I think today could be one for Purito. Seems in form he's far enough back that the top gc guys wont be worried if he has a crack.

    For me todays top 3

    1. J Rod
    2. Froomedog
    3. Quintana

I hope Quintana destroys it and takes back good time in order to put Froome under more pressure. Atm he only has to worry about TJ and Contador.

There is only going to be one winner though tbh

Hoping Wilco Kelderman might do something today

If Froome can't shake Contador today if he goes on the attack, then its game on as previously posted. Contador got great confidence from holding Froome in the Dauphine last year when he done that hyper spinning that most can't hold on to.

I just hope the other GC contenders try take it to Froome and don't allow sky to bring it all the way to 3km to go and then Froome attacks.

He also dropped Froome on the second last day too of that. This tim is much different though, Contador has a hard Giro in his legs already, Froome is the fresher although I think his staggering efforts in the first week will cost him a bit, especially next week.

Fedrigo and Van Bilsen have a gap of 13 minutes with about 100km left. It'll be interesting to see how quickly the gap plummets when everyone starts climbing!

They'll need about 20 minutes before I'd give them a chance.

    Also over 100km left, they've about 50 done...big difference!
