Is there nobody here with a bit of basic electronics knowledge that could maybe guess what these things actually consist of, or come up with their own version?

All it's doing is lowering the voltage output by the receiver, presumably with no effect on the signal going the other way.

It's a diode in series with the inner core.

    Same thing listed here..

In fact, would this do the job guys??

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/In-Line-Signal-Amplifier-Sky-Satellite-TV-Booster-2-F-Connectors-Boosting-NEW-/370261093737

Found this about the above product on Digital-Kaos.. "Connect it up to your box(in is feed from LNB,out is to your box) it will boost the signal from the lnb and hey presto all channels. From reading some of the posts on here it is vital that the amp is a sloping one...ie 13db to 18db as this one is and not just on freq ie 20db"

Yeah, thread here last year mentions a diode (& capacitor): http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=89214784

Do what job? It would seem the problem is that the crappy receiver can't even manage to output the correct voltage range to switch the LNB to vertical polarisation. If a line amp. works, it's just by accident, with there being enough of a voltage drop through it. More than likely all you'd manage would be to overload the tuner with signal.

these fixes been round for a while, certain closed source boxes have trouble with the 12/18 signal sent to lnb when polarity of channel changes , V or H. It usually happens when a genuine Sky supplied box is connected to the same lnb, both boxes compete the genuine one will always succeed, if you disconnect the genuine box from the dish the other box will perform fine, the fix regulates the signal from the other box to allow signal to lnb to switch polarities as requested by box. The safest way to ensure this is to replace the lnb itself
many of the older Sky quads weren't meant to be connected to these boxes, if you look around replacement lnb's aren 't too dear, zinwell
    ones are fairly reliable

My skybox v8 has dropped every channel, it was fine this morning, but now there's nothing just that blue no signal logo, any ideas. Thanks

Most likely cable loose at receiver or dish.

I think it must be, I brought it back to the store I bought it from he plugged it in and it was perfect, I tried again when I got home and no signal, I triple checked the bnc connection so my guess is it must be on the dish side, lad from the shop will be up the ladder 2m so hopefully it's sorted

No, that is an amplifier not a voltage dropper. In fact it will probably overload your satellite receiver as the signal from an LNB is already very high.
