Plastering a small step

I've got a small bit of plastering to do at the front door, where I removed a high kerb to leave myself a step, instead of walking down my ramp.
So the question is, I want to buy one of the small premixed bags of sand/cement to plaster the front of it, is this sufficient? Or do I need "proper plaster"?

Depends- usually those pre-mixed bags are marked "building mortar"- made up with soft sand for bricklaying/ pointing. You won't be able get a good, durable finish with a building mortar. For plastering you need a mix with sharp sand (coarser sand, less fines), if you cannot get a pre-mixed bag of render mix (I don't know if these can be got) you could get a small bag of sharp sand, some cement and mix your own.
