VW Golf Intermittently losing power, EPC light and check engine light on

    Hi All,
Just looking for any suggestions on my current car trouble as I am at a loss for what else to try (not a mechanic btw).
Long winded but this is the situation below (as much as I can remember or understand):
Car: 01 1.4L VW Golf Mk4 with just under 200k miles on it.

About three weeks ago on the way to work, the car started losing power when driving intermittently - loss of power was only for second or two and then would drive normally afterwards. On way back home, the same thing happened but the check engine light and EPC light came on so I swung into a mechanic. Using the code ready showed misfires across all cylinders and some engine sensor failures so replaced the ignition coil (replaced - used part) and reset the codes. Drove home fine afterwards. A few days later the car started to do the same thing. Back to the mechanic and over the next couple of days looked at the EGR valve (not replaced), throttle body on engine (replaced-new part), oxygen sensor (replaced-new part), crankshaft sensor (replaced-new part), spark plugs and a hose towards back of engine area (not sure what this related to).

These changes occurred over a week or two and car would drive fine for a while and then the issue would reoccur. Eventually car stopped near work (started to cut out when idle - revs dropping to 0) so found another mechanic that was recommended for engine issues. He went through pretty much the same areas of what it could be according to what was showing up on the diagnostics and changed the timing belt as one of the belts was slack (was due a change this year anyway). He also changed a few more parts (something related to throttle under the dash and something related to brake cable) and as it currently stands, the car is driving with this intermittent issue.

So, hopefully I have explained the issue and what has been done so far so just wondering if there is any other suggestions that I can talk to the mechanic about (this problem is frustrating him too so he'll only be glad of any other likely suggestions).

BTW - I know I could resolve this issue by getting a new car but I'd ideally prefer not to so if possible (unless lotto numbers come up).

    Any suggestions appreciated

I don't know what your issue is likely to be but spending anything north of 50 quid repairing a 1.4 golf of that era, specially one with 200k on it is a fools game.
While your issues don't sound like the typical engine issue that these suffer, sooner rather then later that engine will give up.

    How old is your battery?
