Oh no it's Omar Sharif this week:

A small band of you will probably want to pay your dignified respects to a silver screen giant.

Everyone else can practice your grief whoring.

    So that's that.

Now here is is smacking a female fan in front of cameras:

For the week that was in it.

What the hell is "grief whoring"? What the hell are you talking about?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,284 ✭✭✭StewartGriffin

Condolences to his friends and family.

What exactly is the point of that statement? I honestly don't get it. Is it to help his family and friends feel better? Is it to help you feel better? Don't get me wrong, I sympathize with families at many funerals, but expressing condolences to someone you don't know about someone you didn't know on an internet forum is just...weird!

Grief whoring/grief porn is a recently new phenomenon where people go out of their way to grieve for someone that they didn't know. It's tacky, phoney, and cringeworthy:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mourning_sickness

We see it on boards every week when some z list celebrity kicks the bucket and someone has to start a thread on it.

We even had a RIP thread for a fcuking dog that barked at riot police in Greece. I sh1t you not:

How do they know when an actor is dead?

I have watched both. Sharif was a good actor. That still doesn't change the fact that he was a bit of a thug.
In 2003 he was convicted of head-butting a French police officer in a Casino.
And in 2007, he head-butted a parking attendant, breaking the attendant's nose.

Every man leaves behind a legacy, whether that is good or bad. Don't expect me to be one of the lickspittles brushing his violence under the carpet.

Would you do it for someone up the road nobody ever heard of?
Doing it for famous people is all about yourself and just a bit self congratulatory.

Of course, if a neighbour on your road, even if you dont know then, you would still pay your respects to the family.

And yet, you feel the need to come on to boards and start a thread about it anyways, and make sure to point out how you're doing the opposite, like that guy who has to make sure everyone knows he doesn't have a facebook account....

Not really though, just everyone always says that don't they? I don't think the majority really mean it, it's just a sound-byte/type-byte.

The issue is - what is the point in expressing condolences to the family of Omar Sharif on a website like this?

The truth is that he's not really expressing condolences to the family.
He's just saying "condolences to the family" because its a cliche, by his own admission - "to be polite," to appear sympathetic.

It's not said for the benefit of the family at all. It's said for the benefit of the poster.

Dr Zhivago is an amazing film.

And one of the very best things about it is the music. It's not often I even notice the music in a movie, but it's just outstanding in Dr Zhivago.

Absolutely beautiful music. If anyone ever wants something to do on a wet miserable afternoon, grab a bottle of Baileys and kick back and watch Dr Zhivago.

Well who else benefits from it???

Except that some may think - "Ah, good old Valeyard, offering condolences to the family of Omar Sharif, well done him."

Omar doesn't benefit, because he's dead.
The family are unlikely, to say the least, to see your message.

    Who is it for?
