When these first opened I went to the local NDLS to renew my 3rd provisional for one year, got the photo taken, had my PPS number etc, grand.

1 year later I went back, "do you have anything with your PPS number on, we will need to take your photo again"....er ok

Last week I went back to get my full licence, "do you have anything with your PPS number on, we will need to take your photo again"....bloody hell.

Aside from the fact that you should only ever need to go once and subsequent renewals should be postal....can they not just use the same photo and isn't it good enough to only provide PPS proof once?

At least I'll not have to go back for 10 years now I suppose

I was only down in a ndls centre last week applying for my full license, tried handing in proof of my PPS number, but said he didn't need it as I provided proof last time, depends on who you get I suppose.

In fairness it isn't difficult to provide proof anyway, sure your public services card is the same size as your license.

I presume you only get one if you receive Social Welfare?

Don't think it is out of order to take a new picture of you each time you get a new license/learner permit. Peoples appearance changes over time. If they let people keep on using the same picture, eventually people will look nothing like the person in the picture. That makes life hard for people who have to check photo ID's for their job...like Guards or airline check in clerks.

Ok, so there was just a year between your renewals, your appearance isn't going to change all that much in 12 months. But they kinda have to apply the same approach to everyone. It would be very messy if it was done for some people and not for others.

The PPS thing is probably for security/data protection reasons and to make sure that the person presenting themselves for the license, is actually that person. Driver license fraud is an issue that the powers that be at the NDLS centres have to face.

Went in today to apply for my full license, they took a photocopy of my learner permit and gave it back to me. Should they have kept it?
A bit worried they'll send back my application but the clerk handed it to me so it would be very unusual.

No they give it back to everyone, when you receive your full license in a week the letter will tell you to post the old license back to a place in Mayo.

OK thanks for that! I should really have asked him but that clarifies it.

It's a shiny, brand new rule that they give you back your licence/ permit now :)

I reckon that some centres are more fussy about things like PPS because they think the processing centre might bounce it unnecessarily. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

I could go into all the reasons applications must be made in person but even I don't want to be that boring. If you are having to make the app in person, then why not snap a fresh photo in case they don't see you again for a decade...
